Most RN's first borns?

Nurses General Nursing

Hi everybody,

I have a question and PLEASE dont anybody blast me for typecasting, this was not MY statement, it was a LCSW I was friends with. She claims that a huge % of nurses are first born females of alcoholic fathers. Something to do with the fact that as the first born in dysfunction family of origin you are a caregiver from the get-go. Now my father was not an alcoholic, but I am a first born. I was wondering how many of us are first-borns. (Also, she said this to me a long time ago, and I have lost touch with her, so I cannot ask her where the heck she got her information was) I was just starting school at the time and didnt really fight with her about it, just kind of gave her one of the Hmmm, thats an interesting opinion.... answers. Also, she meant it as a compliment, that we take a difficult beginning and build on our strengths and turn them into a career.

So, how many first borns are out there?

I am a first born, Dad was not alcoholic, Mom also a nurse and a first born-no alcoholic, cousin Anne-first born, aunt Edith-second child-no alcohol, aunt Helen-5th born, no alcohol, etc. I come from a family of nurses, maybe we need more alcohol??????

Second born (have a bro, raised apart) only female, now matriarch...to an alcoholic father (who committed suicide). Was in law enforcement for YEARS, went to nursing after I cared for my mom when she had BC (and passed away).

Specializes in ER, Critical care, Telemetry.

2nd born,no etoh but very demanding family. parents disfunctional and very self centered.....even when us kids were young...

My parents had twins first, of which I am the second born of. My twin teaches computers. History of alcohol problems from both sides of the family. I rarely drink alcohol, it gives me a raging headache. Alcoholism was not an issue in our house. I doubt anyone comes from a "Leave it Beaver" background in this world, I certainly didn't. As with most families we had our issues and we had our dysfunctions.

Specializes in ICU, CM, Geriatrics, Management.

Third-born, of beautifully, loving non-alky parents.

Specializes in Travel Nursing, ICU, tele, etc.

Fifth born with four much older brothers, only girl. Caretaker of myself. Abounding mental illness, rage, violence, sexual addiction. As a nurse I am REALLY good at calming down agitated men. No alcoholism but wish there had been !!! hehe

Specializes in NICU Someday, I Hope.

I'm the youngest of 3 but product of a broken home at age 7-9 (hard to say when it became broken -- long before they parted ways, though). I went with Dad, sisters went with Mom.

I love my dad but his faults include EtOH, domestic violence, rage issues, inability to discuss anything "real".

Specializes in Telemetry/Med Surg.

I'm 3/3. No EtOH/abuse in my family.

I'm a first born. I think I'm drawn to the medical field because I grew up in hospitals...my father has Chrons Disease and was frequently in for surgeries throughout my childhood. I feel very at-ease in a hospital setting (as long as I'm not the one in the bed), and I've always wanted to be a medical professional.

Specializes in Adult Acute Care Medicine.

First born and born to (thank goodness now recovering) alcoholic dad.

I am a firstborn, and so is my Mom!! :lol2:

Specializes in geriatric, med-surg, inhome vents.
