Hi everybody,
I have a question and PLEASE dont anybody blast me for typecasting, this was not MY statement, it was a LCSW I was friends with. She claims that a huge % of nurses are first born females of alcoholic fathers. Something to do with the fact that as the first born in dysfunction family of origin you are a caregiver from the get-go. Now my father was not an alcoholic, but I am a first born. I was wondering how many of us are first-borns. (Also, she said this to me a long time ago, and I have lost touch with her, so I cannot ask her where the heck she got her information was) I was just starting school at the time and didnt really fight with her about it, just kind of gave her one of the Hmmm, thats an interesting opinion.... answers. Also, she meant it as a compliment, that we take a difficult beginning and build on our strengths and turn them into a career.
So, how many first borns are out there?

I myself am a first-born of an alcoholic family and was raised catholic....Hmmmmm Very interesting... Despite several posts by non-first borns and non-alcoholic fathers, there is a high percentage of us??? My coworker is also the 1st born of an alcoholic family, and we joke about our dysfunctional families together... She was also raised catholic...
baby!! of the family....although raised like the only child....sister and two older brothers are 10, 12, and 14 years older respectively...so more like a first born only child....
no alcoholism....but...
Mother was definitely a narcissist....full blown disordered....very abusive...I rec'd the brunt of her wrath...
Father was passive...afraid of her...
He was very kind and good to me....she was a raging shrew..
I married a male version of my mother....and divorced him before he killed me....

Spooky stuff! I'm first born, female & ETOH Dad & food abusing Mom who now abuses her scrip meds.
Even my husband noted that we all functioned like alcoholic families, always covering for the alcoholic parent, managing things at home. And my Dad is still alive & kicking & drinking at age 89.
