Fat people always make stories that would be fairly gross into something horribly gross.
My worst story was the 350 lb. patient who had not had a bowel movement for 2 months (no clue how) and the medical team decided to give him all sorts of stuff to get his guts moving. When he finally went, it took 4 of us to clean him up and there was probably 10 lb. of poop on the bed.
I work in the surgical ward and this happens quite often. During change of dressings, i assist this particular doc. While he is doing his thing with his bloody gloves and all, his mobile phone rings, gets it from his pocket and answers the call then after the call he will put it back to his pocket and continue with his task. I wonder if i can swab his mobile for culture.
We had this lady a few weeks ago who had one of those mucous secreting uterine tumours. She was palliative but needed to have the mucous removed because she looked as though she was 8 months pregnant and it was causing her severe discomfort.
So she had a laparotomy and we removed the stuff by the bucket load. It was one of the most disgusting things I've ever seen.
I remember having to manually disimpact an elderly lady who hadn't had a bowel movement for 2 weeks. It really did seem more like I was helping her deliver a baby. It was the biggest poop I'd ever seen. In addition her roomate could hear what was going on, and kept yelling out "puuuuuuush".
A few years ago we had a patient that developed MRSA in his CABG incision. The nurse who was taking care of him about 2 weeks post surgery (before they knew about the infection) told me that she was helping him to stand up and all of a sudden his sternal incision popped open a little and bloody puss shot out across the room.
Then he was moved to our ICU. Anyway, we had to do Q4 hr sterile wet to dry dressing changes. The incision was completely open. You could see the wires used to wire his sternum back together after his heart surgery... you could also see down in between his ribs. Every time his heart beat you could see his lungs or heart, OR SOMETHING jumping around underneath his ribs. It freaked me out. Needless to say the patient was very depressed. I'm not sure if he ever made it out of there alive.
When he finally went, it took 4 of us to clean him up and there was probably 10 lb. of poop on the bed.
Call me crazy, but all I can think of with this is the comedy skit with the guy from Blue Collar Comedy (can't remember his name, Tater Salad) where he says "You ever have a poop so good your pants fit better afterwards?"
I once had a pt with necrotising fasciiti, she was also on a vent and required frequent oral suctioning. The wound in her abdomen was huge, with an opening from one hip to the other and lots of drainage. One day the ID doc comes in,checks the wound and then suctions it out with the yankeur we used on her mouth then hangs it back up!!If I hadn't seen him I might have come in later and suctioned her mouth with that thing. When I saw what he did I told him about it and replaced it.He didn't seem to think it was a big deal.
