Mocked by teacher in post conference.

Published

I recently had my teacher mock me in front of the whole class like a bully in a park, "literally" making funny faces and noises like you are watching a movie about bullying. I will report this the the School president and file a complaint about this teacher.....am I being pitiful or is this really unprofessional behavior that should not be accepted? I torn if I should just accept it or stand up. Well, actually I will complaint regardless, but I do wonder. Humm? Please give your opinion.

Pick your battles carefully and tread with caution. I have known of more than one vindictive instructor who failed students who had reported them.

If you report without your ducks in a row, prepare for some retaliatory action.

Right - there was one instructor at my LPN and also one at our college that did this too.

True that, true that, this teacher was a beginner instructor, there is another that has PHD in Nursing, my God I can listen to her the entire day, she is so thorough sweet, patient an absolute joy to be around.

Thank you, don't take any mistreatment from a professor how is it that they treat students like this and not a patient, stand up for dignity as a human being for you and your patients.

I knew there was someone that felt something was wrong, I posted the thread and I couldn't believe I was hearing take it so you get the grade. "Never, my dignity is the bottom line I'm not taking that kind of crap" Thanks for your reply. I agree 100% with you.

I will speak to the teacher being rude or take it to the nursing director or further if needed!

Uh huh. Take it straight to Barack Obama. ;)

This is a reminder, in nursing school and in life, to pick your battles wisely. Click on the link below for some stories of 'unfair' treatment in nursing school.

Mistreatment by an instructor is wrong, but life isn't fair.

I was treated less than kindly by more two instructors. One said in front of other students that I wasn't "smart enough" to handle A&P, and another said that maybe this wasn't the career for me.

I reported one of these instructors to the dean of nursing and ended up with a bullseye on my back. From that point forward I decided to suck it up, keep a low profile and focus on graduating.

These 'slights' took place in 2005. It is now 2014. I've been a gainfully employed nurse for almost a decade and my former instructors are a mere, distant figment of my long term memory.

If I had withdrew or dropped from the program, I would have allowed the two instructors to win by permitting them to rent valuable space inside my head. If I had continued reporting every wrongdoing, big or little, I would have exposed myself to retaliation up to and including forced withdrawal from the nursing program due to a bogus clinical practicum failure.

Again, this is a reminder to pick your battles wisely. If you fight every little battle, you'll be zapped of the energy to accomplish the feats in life that actually matter. Let the small stuff slide.

A huge aspect of nursing entails having the humility to suck some things up. Patients are going to be rude. Guess what? Revenue-generating patients are backed up by management. Doctors are going to be rude. Guess what? Doctors are backed up by management since they're considered the money makers of healthcare facilities. Life ain't fair, but it is what it is.

I agree that some battles aren't worth fighting. However, I think that taking abuse repeatedly is one that is worth fighting. Once, maybe twice someone could be having a bad day, sure!

If one wants to be nurse bad enough, there are other nursing schools where one fulfill that goal!

I had the same thing happen to me about 2 weeks ago and I have been struggling with myself with what to do. There was an exam I did not do well on and Im normally an A/B student. She sarcastically told me "Theres a book for our class, you should read it" In front of my clinical group too. It was completely unprofessional. So much for her being a mentor lol. BUT I think Im going to finish out the course then talk to another instructor from an older course in the program to see what she thinks without mentioning names. :) Best of luck to you. Wish you wouldn't have withdrawn so quickly.

I must have been very fortunate. I had a great R.N. school experience. No bullies, supportive classmates, great instructors that were interested in our success and learning.

There was some "weeding out" the first couple of weeks, but from then on it was smooth sailing. No favorites (that I was aware of), and as long as you did the work, you were golden.

To complete nursing school and work as a nurse you really do need thick skin. You may want to re-think this as a career choice. Best of luck in what ever you decide.

Wow it is very common to have tough teachers. I had one that I referred to as Mrs.Puff from spongebob. She told us that those who pass with C's will be incompetent nurses. Also said those who have test anxiety is a poor excuse for never studying. Was I offended heck yea..I was the C student...J was the test anxiety taker and trust me Id rack my brain over studying. I turned out like a butterfly nurse though lol. How to overcome a tough person..feed them their own food. If she is making fun..laugh and play it. Then prove them wrong. You will face this in any field.
