Dear Mike,

Please add "CREK" for "CREEK" and no Ohioan would ever say "YA'ALL"--I know I say it all the time and people give me STRANGE looks...... :p

ERNOH.... I hear you,,I would suggest the word to sound more like CRIK, for that small stream that runs behind the house.

Since we're on the subject,,,,what's on top of your house?? A ROOF or a RUFF.

One that always bugged me,,,,the road through town is ROOT 40, not ROUTE 40!!!

There's probably dozens of these floating around,,,many we just take for granted. I hear a lot of them because I work in radio, and am concious of the way I speak, and how I use a word. When I was in high school, my station manager used to have me do practice news casts, and then write me a note (or letter) on how to improve my speaking. Seemed like a nasty thing to do at the time,,but now, am glad I did!!!

And my two cents worth.......I love spaghetti and chili!!!! Cincinnati style!!!!

Mike

ps sorry I have not logged in lately,,,been real busy covering for other people on vacation...and I think my "puter" has a bug...pulling up pages is like working in molasses!! :scrying:

I love it when they say "Chimley" for chimney:dance:

I have lived all of my life in Ohio. Most of it in the Akron area, but lived 10 years in beautiful Southern Ohio. (Cambridge) I have to laugh though because my cousins were from upstate Michigan and when they talked about a cow, it took us fifteen minutes to figure out what they were talking about. I can't begin to tell you how they pronounced it!

BSN07,,,,I know what you mean with the way different areas say things.

I live about an hour from the Ohio/Pa/WVa boarder. My cousins lived in Pa, near Pittsburgh, and some of the things they called stuff different from in Ohio was amazing. I love hearing people from all over, and their input on this.

The thing on a house that smoke comes out as you said, "chimley", have you ever heard it with a 'b" in it???? "chimbley"

My darling daughter, who is about to graduate from nursing school,,,to this day,,,cannot say ambulance. It comes out "am-blee-ance".

We could do a whole thread on the way things are spelled. Now,,I am the first to say that I am terrible at spelling..when I went to school, they were just starting to teach it by sound..phonetics I guess.

That said,,,,WOW, some people are so clueless..does everyone turn off their spell check!!!! On the other hand, think about it, the english language at times makes not sense at all.

Like the word BOW. That could be the front of a ship, a ribbon on a gift, somthing you shoot arrows with, a boy friend....what else!!???

See what I mean.

Ok I have couple to add...

When people say "SIMULAR" when they are meaning "SIMILAR"

When People say "WAL-MARTS or J.C. PENNIES" Instead of "WAL-MART/ JC PENNY"

As far as POP goes.. I live in TN I know how that one goes.. I have been to a Resturant before, Im pretty sure it was Golden Carral in Nashville and I was asked what kind of Coke I would like.

It used to drive my friend crazy when people would call Kroger "Krogers".

"There is no *S* in Kroger!!!" he would say! :)

I have to admit, I guess I'm guilty of adding an S to Kroger, as well.

Frankly, it does not sound right without it. I guess I started with adding an S because of plural or possesive.

I noticed not only what people say, but also how. In the south, there's that southern drawl, and the way some words come out. Here in Southern/Southeastern Ohio, you may notice, that people tend to mumble, and slur words together.

I have to say, that when we go into North Carolina to visit my wife's family, I could just sit around and listen to them talk all day long. I just love a thick southern accent.

By the way, does EVERYTHING you order to eat in the south come with grits, no matter if you ordered it or not!??!?!?!?

I'm ok with it either way,,,,I love grits... a little butter, and I'm there!!!

I'm from southern Ohio. I live about 60 miles from Cincy. I have several friends out of state that enjoy listening to me talk. Some of their favorite words of mine include: Dog, phone, home, toe, comb, creek/crick. They ask me to say them just to hear me say them. Supposedly we southern ohioans say DAWG instead of dog.

I took this to work, and had to explain it to a few people. I guess they've never heard anyone from Cleveland? :chuckle:

I'd add the word "roof" to that list.----Born and raised in Cleveland

Your kidding right?

Not everybody drinks pop with their meal of chili plopped on 'sketti'?

I have to ask where my coat is AT and if you didn't hear me ask the question then 'please?' is the way to have me repeat myself. Say 'excuse me' and I'll let you walk past or wonder if you belched.

Now, if you don't quit making fun of buckeye people, then I promise I'll have to bring green bean casserole to our next gathering.

Stella,

That is funny! I am a Buckeye...transplanted in WV...of course, I still say "excuse me" when I belch...I wondered why people down here never do and they look at me like I am WEIRD when I do! I guess it's an OHIO thing...they wouldn't understand!!! :rotfl:

When I was 10 I moved from Dayton to Adams County. That was an education. I couldn't fiqure out what they were talking about when they were saying "tobaca". I had to ask. It's tobacco that they raise down there. My sister lives in Flordia and she says soda. The saying goes for weather in Ohio, "If you don't like the weather wait 10 minutes!" Yesterday it went from heat index of 109 to 75 in two hours. Got to love it! :) Coming to Columbus 4 years ago was a very intersting thing. It was like the beverly hillbillies goes to Dublin. Here we were in the middle of the golf tourmanent where Tiger Woods plays and we are trying to get our U-Haul truck parked. Never again, but I have to laugh about it till this day.

try the opposite I went from Columbus to Adams county 2 years ago and let m just say Culture shock. I love it down here it is just so different, Not to mention people are RUDE. I was broke down on the side of the road and over 30 people drove by not one stopped. I couldn't get a signal on my cell phone and I had my 3 kids in the car. Thankfully a guy who was in the area for work stopped and gave me a hand. He wasn't even from around here. People are also NOSY.
