Microbiology - Summer 2005

Published

Just getting the Microbiology thread started for those of us taking it this summer :) Let's introduce ourselves. I'm sure we may recognize each other from the A&P thread and hopefully there will be some new students too!

I'm Jennifer, married with 3 kids (11,6,2). I'm starting the nursing program in August and other than my humanities elective, I'll be ALL DONE with gen. ed. courses. I've been a SAHM for 7 years but am considering a PT summer job to help pay for expenses (mine and DD's - middle school is expensive between cheerleading ($305), flute ($700!!) and the newly mandated uniforms  ). Oh and I have been a mystery shopper for 7 years too which basically helps us get out and do stuff that we otherwise wouldn't be able to afford.

My classes start May 17. I'm taking Micro Tues, Wed, Thurs from 6-9 (lecture from 6-7:20, lab from 7:30-9.) I'm also taking English 102 online. YUCK. I don't want to write papers this summer. We're using Tortoro's book in Micro, BTW.

I really have no idea what to expect for this course. I did very well in A&P 1 and 2 (A :balloons: ) but am feeling a bit burnt out - having only 1 week off between spring and summer semester is not enough. We have the entire week of July 4th off for break, and DH and I are surprising our kids with a week in Disneyworld We can't wait!! I spend way too much time on the DIS boards and planning our trip:p

just started yesterday and we did hand swabs, tongue swabs and lip swabs and then the desk tops. Anal swabbing is a bit too much! this reminds me of the gal who got aksed to do a spit slide in human biology lab and the slide showed sperm. A bit too much info about our fellow classmates!

:rotfl: Ok, let me rephrase that....

It's not other classmates business knowing another classmate's medical problems, hygeine practices, or sexual action preferences! :chuckle

I really think it all has to do with what your instructor requires.

Once we do a Gram stain, we use the chart in our lab book. When we do all the tests on that chart, we had a pretty good idea as to what genus we needed to test from. All the rest of the test came from Bergey's ..........(?) for our genus.

We have to have all of our test and results on a Descriptive Chart, do a diary of what we did each day, noting results, references, etc., and a flow chart. We can't eliminate an organism until it has 3 strikes against it, but on our flow chart we only have to have 1 strike against it to eliminate it. (just for show...)

We got one "free" guess at our unknown, and I guessed mine correctly! :) YEAHHHHH! (So, there's 15 out of the possible 100 points for my unknown paper.)

I made 41.5/50 on test 4. Test 5 is Tuesday (6/5), 3rd lab practical is Wednesday (6/6) and our final is Thursday (6/7).

It doesn't matter what I make on test 5 because our lowest grade is dropped. So, I'm studying more for the final. I told my instuctor to not laugh when I make a 20 on test 5. lol She said she has had several people say they aren't even going to take test 5, and just let it be the one dropped. I'm taking it, just to see it. We will be tested over that information on our final.

4 more classes and MicroSUX is history! :)

Good luck to all of you!

I am also in microbiology and I really do not like it. I don't mind looking at the microbes in the scope, but the rest is boring. If anyone out there has done a unknown report I would really like to see how you started it. I know alot of the people in my class love micro. I don't really fully understand what all this has to do with nursing. We she learn what they are and do for sure!!!

Any help I could use!!

Have a great day!!

Last night I told my teacher about the anal testing. He said the teachers are NOT in PA allowed to do that test. Now if he is correct I don't know. I wouldn't refuse to do it as it would be something of MINE. But I don't think it is something that should be done. I wouldn't refuse because of my grade.

We have something called a mini unknown....we work as a group and then we do our own write up about our results. We had alot of plates that didn't take so our group had a hard time getting the results. The only microbe we could find was E. Coli. Other plates didn't grow or were contaminated. He was more happy over the plates that were contaminated then the E. coli. He wants us to make mistakes to learn what we did incorrectly. On our unknowns, he is going to make the plates, hand them out. He said some are really easy and some are hard. It will be my luck that I get the hardest one in the batch.

We do labs every time we are there. (twice a week) Then we have a sheet with really hard questions we need to fill out for grades. My lowest is a 4/5 so I am doing really well on the sheets.

Just everyone pray that I get through this class. I want next summer off after being in the nursing program for my first year!!!

That's a good site for lab tests. (Not everything is available yet, but will be awesome when it is fully updated.)

Also, don't forget the powerpoint I made:

Thank you very much not too sure if this will help it looks like your powerpoint is more than what I do in my class, but you did a great job. I went on the site too. I hope they get it going soon. That looks to be a good one once it is done!!

Do you have a sites were I can get the form, elevation, margin, texture, color and opacity of microbes. Example: E. coli, Microccocus roseus etc? I looked in Bergey's and didn't find much.

Thanks,

Wendy

I got the form, margin, etc just by looking at the growth on the agar plate. Does it not mention that in your lab book? My lab manual has pictures to compare to.

Ok....question. I should know the answer, but I'm suffering from brain warp right now...lol

Is the function for the plasma membrane the same for eukaryotes and prokaryotes, or is it only used for selective permeability in eukaryotes and all the below in prokaryotes?

(i.e. selective permeability, Energy & site catabolism (ETC).)

Thanks! :)

The plasma membrane of prokaryotes is similiar in that is is made of lipids and semi-permeable. It also synthesises exotoxins and exoenzymes though.

Checked the website and got a B. So glad that its over!!!! Summer session micro was the toughest science class that I have taken (Beat out Chemistry!). Dreaded going to class, even had nightmares about it!

Thanks....I swear I am so ready for next Friday....MicroSUX will be over for me! lol

gerry79: Congrats! I hope I end up with at least a B....I should.... It just depends if I &%$@ up the final. (Hopefully the instructor will put the easier questions on it.....yeah right!) LOL :uhoh3:

Great job all! I have my second exam on Tuesday. The instructor claims it will be the hardest because of the chemistry. We'll see how well I do after the holiday LOL
