Microbiology - Summer 2005

Published

Just getting the Microbiology thread started for those of us taking it this summer :) Let's introduce ourselves. I'm sure we may recognize each other from the A&P thread and hopefully there will be some new students too!

I'm Jennifer, married with 3 kids (11,6,2). I'm starting the nursing program in August and other than my humanities elective, I'll be ALL DONE with gen. ed. courses. I've been a SAHM for 7 years but am considering a PT summer job to help pay for expenses (mine and DD's - middle school is expensive between cheerleading ($305), flute ($700!!) and the newly mandated uniforms  ). Oh and I have been a mystery shopper for 7 years too which basically helps us get out and do stuff that we otherwise wouldn't be able to afford.

My classes start May 17. I'm taking Micro Tues, Wed, Thurs from 6-9 (lecture from 6-7:20, lab from 7:30-9.) I'm also taking English 102 online. YUCK. I don't want to write papers this summer. We're using Tortoro's book in Micro, BTW.

I really have no idea what to expect for this course. I did very well in A&P 1 and 2 (A :balloons: ) but am feeling a bit burnt out - having only 1 week off between spring and summer semester is not enough. We have the entire week of July 4th off for break, and DH and I are surprising our kids with a week in Disneyworld We can't wait!! I spend way too much time on the DIS boards and planning our trip:p

I would talk to the Dean of Science over that. I WOULD NOT do it!! ...nor can I imagine it being requested in Microbiology! (I understand the reasoning, but at least as something IN a nursing class not Micro!

I'm beginning to wonder about one of our future labs....it states.....the "patient's" urine sample...

I have already told myself I was not going to volunteer to be the patient. It is NOT a classmate's business if anyone has a bladder infection, STD, etc.

I am a Medical assistant, I have performed plenty of Urine Analysis' but I WILL NOT allow my classmates to research my urine! (For that matter I have had to deal with fecal samples as well, but I WILL NOT let a classmate examine an anal swab from me! I guess it would be different just swabbing the outside of the anas, doing whatever test, and only I see it. Could you imagine what all you could find out about someone? To me, that would go a little close into dealing with Hippa (?) or some other closed medical records laws. No one has business knowing whether or not a fellow classmate has a disease or not.. or doesn't wipe good at all. :rotfl: (which could possibly happen to someone in the class....)

Please question the Dean on this one, if the Dean doesn't see a problem in it, go above his/her head.

That is just weird!

Well, it relieves me to hear that at least one other person thinks it is weird. It's a very sticky situation, because this instructor is very well known and respected, and has won several prestigious awards in her field. I don't doubt that she is an excellent microbiologist -- she definitely "knows her stuff."

I'm pretty torn as to what to do. Part of me wants to run kicking and screaming to the Dean. The other part of me simply wants to do it -- get it over with -- and move on. "Life is too short" kind of thing...

Btw, we also have to do a urinalysis on our own urine, as well. That's the other part of this 'lovely' experiment. That part doesn't bother me at all, for some reason -- maybe because that's a more common test that is performed, medically. It doesn't seem so bad -- though I'm still not thrilled about it. (So, that "volunteer patient" in your syllabus might very well just be you! Yikes!!! :chuckle )

Anybody else find this unusual?

I don't know....I still think "classmates" do not have any business knowing other classmates' medical problems, or hygiene practices.

(I didn't even do the handwashing lab....I made a guy at my lab table be the one to get his hand swabbed...LOL)

I would refuse as well. Why can't you do saliva or a tooth scraping, even a nasal swab? There are plenty of other bacteria on your body to study aside from an anal swab. To me that crosses the line. We haven't had to do any of that yet.

Fun2care, I am a CMA too. Nice to see another on this board :)

Cool Achoo!!

As for the swabs....we have done a swab on the back of the throat, tooth scraping, and a nasal swab. lol AND....I didn't really feel comfortable allowing classmates to see what was growing in my mouth, on my teeth, and up my nose..lol

I actually swabbed the throat cultures from 2 of the 3 other people at my table. (Being a medical assistant comes in handy at times....lol One of the girls said she has a bad gag reflex when she gets a strept test done. I am so good.....she didn't gag. LOL :)

he he he go you! Yeah when we had to do the ink stain, my table asked me to do their smears to get good feathering. It definately helps having worked in a lab for a while :)

I read ahead and ....we don't have to do a urine sample.

It says, "Get a spiked urine sample from demo table"

If it's real urine, I'm wondering exactly where it came from. Do labs sell urine after the tests have been ran that a Dr. requests? Did the lab lady pee in a cup every time she needed to go? ....make her hubby do the same, and her kiddos?

:chuckle :chuckle :chuckle :chuckle :chuckle

I would guess it is a man made sample. We have stuff we use for proficiency testing for urines and preg tests, so it is probably something like that. That would be nasty if it were real. Even in the fridge it gets nasty quick, * shudders*

lol...I know, all I could think of was the stinch. :uhoh21:

Atlanta6789....your professor is sick!! I cant imagine why he/she would ask the class to do that. Anal swabs?! :barf01:

Report to dean please.....

I am also in microbiology and I really do not like it. I don't mind looking at the microbes in the scope, but the rest is boring. If anyone out there has done a unknown report I would really like to see how you started it. I know alot of the people in my class love micro. I don't really fully understand what all this has to do with nursing. We she learn what they are and do for sure!!!

Any help I could use!!

Have a great day!!

Today in our class the throat and anal swabs were mentioned as well. As soon as he heard our reaction he said we didn't have to if we didn't want to. Thank goodness!
