Microbiology - Summer 2005

Published

Just getting the Microbiology thread started for those of us taking it this summer :) Let's introduce ourselves. I'm sure we may recognize each other from the A&P thread and hopefully there will be some new students too!

I'm Jennifer, married with 3 kids (11,6,2). I'm starting the nursing program in August and other than my humanities elective, I'll be ALL DONE with gen. ed. courses. I've been a SAHM for 7 years but am considering a PT summer job to help pay for expenses (mine and DD's - middle school is expensive between cheerleading ($305), flute ($700!!) and the newly mandated uniforms  ). Oh and I have been a mystery shopper for 7 years too which basically helps us get out and do stuff that we otherwise wouldn't be able to afford.

My classes start May 17. I'm taking Micro Tues, Wed, Thurs from 6-9 (lecture from 6-7:20, lab from 7:30-9.) I'm also taking English 102 online. YUCK. I don't want to write papers this summer. We're using Tortoro's book in Micro, BTW.

I really have no idea what to expect for this course. I did very well in A&P 1 and 2 (A :balloons: ) but am feeling a bit burnt out - having only 1 week off between spring and summer semester is not enough. We have the entire week of July 4th off for break, and DH and I are surprising our kids with a week in Disneyworld We can't wait!! I spend way too much time on the DIS boards and planning our trip:p

One week down, 7 to go! So far, the class isn't bad, it is getting up so early that is killing me. I sure hope my body adjusts quick!

We have a quiz and a lab every day- so far so good!

I made a micro lab test powerpoint quiz: http://www.nursingjourney.com. (....not sure if I already posted that or not...)

I'm taking test 3 tomorrow, test 4 is already in the testing center, but that has to be taken on or before next Saturday.

Test 5 is in class on July 5th, the final is in class on July 7th.

3 weeks to go, which really means: ONLY 9 classes left! :)

(Truthfully, I have almost started to like MicroSux! ....I guess it's the challenge of it all. I don't think I'll make an A because the tests are outrageously difficult. I'll probably get a B, ya never know! :) (....providing I do at least as well on test tomorrow, test 4, test 5, and the final as I did on tests 1 and 2.)

Good luck!

Thanks! :)

I'm not sure how I did. The test seemed easier than the others, question wise, but I think my mind was even more mince meat than usual. Things I knew suddenly slipped away as soon as my pencil hit the paper. :(

Oh well, maybe I did better than I think I did....like with the other two tests. lol

seems that everyone is doing fairly well :)

I just handed in my 5 page paper for review, and we just did 2 gram stains today. It seems I am behind everyone else a bit. 7 more weeks!!

I did the same thing! As already posted, I missed the first class. After the second and third class, knew it was going to be a long 8 weeks!

I'm studying for the 4th test now. Our 5th test will cover Gram + bacteria, viruses, fungi, and what ever else she throws in there. lol

July 4th isn't going to be that good for me this year. I will be busy with family stuff all day, when I should be studying for my test on the 5th, and my final on the 7th. uhoh!

July 7th, hurry up!

Well, I had my 1st exam on Monday and it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be! It consisted of 6 chapters..1,2,3,4,5,10. The test was pretty standard...multiple choice, fill ins, essay..ect. I have my lab practical midterm next Tuesday so that should be interesting...lol. My class ends July 27th.....cannot wait!!!! Good luck everyone!!

See, we don't have a textbook. Our school only allows the instructors to make you buy one book, and he does alot of labs so we have the lab manual. He then prints out outlines and we lecture off of those. I did buy the Tortora book that goes with, and he doesn't follow along with the chapters. We are now going over the bacterial cell structures( gotta love peptidoglycan!), gram + and -, simple, negative and differential stains. I have gotten 100% of all the quizzes so Thursdays test shouldn't be too bad ( I hope!)

I am taking Micro M-Thurs 9:30-2:20. It just started on 6/20. It is an exhausting class. We will be tested on 5 chapters every week, plus labs. The instructor seems sympathetic that we are in a fast track summer program, so he tries to help us out. Rare, for science instructors.

I over heard alot of the girls say that they are not buying the book??? Don't understand that, but alot of people seem to get by on notetaking...not me. I have to read, re-read every detail. Take notes, record, and still forget. Go figure.

WOOHOOOO! I pulled off 42.1 out of 50 on test 3! My mind went blank; I don't know how I did it!

Thank goodness for bonus questions, and partial credit! LOL :balloons:

2 weeks, 2 days (including tonight's class)

or 8 classes to go, including tonight's class

which means.... 2 tests, 1 final, 1 lab practical, and the unknown assignment all in the next few weeks!
