*Microbiology Spring 2012*

Published

Hello all, I was wondering if anyone will be taking Microbiology in the spring..if so I thought it would be a good idea to start a new thread for the new yr for this particular class. I figured that we can all be able to post questions and answers here regarding the class or just to talk about anything regarding micro.

I will be starting my Micro class on tuesday im going to edison state college in fort myers fl. Im very excited and also a little nervous to be starting school after a semester break.

* I look forward to see who else will be starting micro this spring and I hope we can all be able to help each other out throughout the semester :yeah:

I would do A&P first. AT my school, you need A&P1 and 2 to apply to the nursing program. You only need Micro to graduate and do your final semester of nursing school, so most people do AP, apply to the program and do Micro in the semester they are waiting for a response. Having done A&P is a big help with micro, I think it helps with study skills too, with all the memorization of muscles and bones in A&P, remembering names of microbes is not as hard. Also you get introduced to the microscope in A&P so it would help to do it first. If you've done Biology it could help too.

I'm in micro now and preparing for my second exam this week. I got a 95 on the first exam, but this exam covers growth and metabolism YUCK! I just keep telling myself I have to keep my A now.

Specializes in Long Term Care,Cardiac Care,Pediatric..

I'm so stressed in my micro class! It's a really hard class and I'm freaking out! We had our second lecture exam today and I feel like I bombed it. I feel like my teacher doesn't really explain a lot of things and it expects a lot out of us and acts like we are all going to be Doctors. Sorry, had to vent!!!

yeah, i am taking mine online and taking my final exam on friday. it was definetly harder having to do it online. the hardest part for me to grasp was the krebs cycle and metabolism processes. just keep studying so it stay fresh. try watching videos to make things more interesting.

good luck!

this stuff was taught in your biochem or chemistry class, so this should have been a review. i know what you mean though, because i spent 6 hours alone going thru gycolysis, krebs, and electron transport, just so that i could thoroughly understand the cycle in which the microorganisms go through in metabolism beore i even got to what my teacher wanted us to know. when i learned these processes in chemistry, boy was i lost! my micro teacher pointed out what was important (making atp and nadh!) and left all that other stuff out.

i wish i could have all of you in my class. :scrying: hearing about students having a very hard time because they have a teacher that isnt helping is very sad. keep your heads up. the semester is almost half over.

also, keep this website in mind to help you in your studies: www.khanacademy.org

ok....i am lost now.....i thought the first few chapters were hard....now i am AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH........he says stuff like...i dont need to go over this as you had this in bio....ya...back in the 70s.....uumm....all i can say now...i am screwed!!.....

he spitting out numbers of NADH,FADH....electron goes thru NADH dehydrognase thru Q into cytochrome c.....WHAT!!????

i should be studyin.....instead i am cleaning.....i am puting it off and puting it off....i dont care how proteins pump hydrogen across the membrane....should i care?....i maybe would if i understood.....i DO NOT UNDERSTAND a word he is talking about.....and i am not alone at that.......:sniff:

i got an 84 on my first exam...not what i am use to but i passed all the same.....62 was the class average....

this stuff is so out of my reach....how am i going to geth thru nursing school.....does this come into play with any nursing classes?......i want to be a nurse...not a microbiologist....

i probably should just stay being an LPN.....and not waste a spot.....

welcome to my pitty party... and thanks for listening...

Micro was the most difficult class I took. I ended up with an A in the class...actually ended up with a higher overall percentage in this class than any of my other pre-reqs and I just applied to my program with a 4.0.. However, Micro was the only class I literally cried though, I hated it. My professor was brilliant BUT not easy to follow AT ALL. I found that reading the chapters myself, translating what I read onto paper and re-reading it all in my own words really helped my understanding. I took notes in class to see what parts he empahsized as I thought we'd more likely be tested on that material and made sure to understand that thoroughly. Even thought I thought my professor was brilliant, his way of teaching wasn't working with me, so I abondoned his methods and self learned.

I also thought animations such as this Animation: How the NAD+ Works

aided in my understanding of the more complex processes. I would watch them over and over until I understood.

Good luck, don't give up.

One of my favorite movies, A League of their Own, there's this quote that I always think of when when something seems impossible...

"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great." Jimmy Dugan

you can do it! :)

thanks for the response...

we all ready know what to expect on his exams....we have 3 exams and a final...for each exam there is a list of "potential" test questions.....this exam has 34 on its list...could be as simple as to describe fermentation...or or list factors that impact enzymatic functioning...

what i did with the first test was googled used youtube and anything on the internet i could find......i write out each one of his potential questions and go over and over them....

i can not relate to his notes on the board..they make NO sense to me....and the book...forget it...sometimes i do get it from the book...but mostly from youtube...their are so many people on there that just make it make sense to me.....

i have been accepted to the RN program all ready..this is my last of the sciences that i would have to have taken WHILE doing the program....i wanted them ALL out of the way...so now when i start in the fall i will only have the nursing courses....

micro is just so overwhelming to me....cause i do not know the basics.....and its a pain to have to go and relearn what i should all ready know....and very time consuming at that....

thanks again redhead!!

Dont let one professor discourage you. Dont forget about Khan Academy

review your bio stuff here. You need to put in the time and relearn stuff from forever ago. If you didnt read in my previous post, I had to take 6 hours to refresh myself stuff from glycolysis, krebs and electron transport, from Chem which was only a year ago. :specs: You can do this, you just have to commit to putting in the time. Some of this stuff will come back, it always does. Do your best now. Good luck :)

I am taking biology this semester, but was debating as to whether I should take micro or A&P I in the summer which is ten weeks long or wait until the fall when the semester is 16 weeks. Didn't really know which one was more involved or had a lot more to memorize. Good luck to everyone no matter what you are taking!

Thanks for the tip on Khan Academy. It really helps with what I am doing this semester in biology. Every little bit helps, and having material presented in different ways really helps me because we all learn things differently.

I had the same dilemma, but it was between micro and AP2 in the summer (You ought to check the pre-req requirments for Micro, cuz at our school, AP1 is mandatory to take before Micro. We are allowed to take AP2 after Micro)

I opted to take AP2 in the summer under advisement of the AP professor. He said that Micro contains much more in depth information, as to learning the processes of the body in AP which could be easier to master in a 10 week format. Each class will be hard, but take for instance now, I am taking Micro. We are going to have a test on about 6 chapters. These few chapters that we are learning now are going fast. That would be about the equivilent of about 10 chapters in a 10 week class.

Not to mention the lab (which we are tested on as well on the off weeks of our lecture tests) have a lot of things you need to know as well; the Gram stain, Acid Fast Stain, Capsule Stain, Endospore stain. Some are similar, but some use different ingredients and different methods. :uhoh3: When you are memorizing 7 different experiments, they all get meshed together and you forget which one uses the Acid Alcohol and which one doesnt, which one uses a heat fixed slide and which one doesnt..... :bluecry1: See what I mean?

AP isnt going to have any of that, so you are better off with AP in the summer (IMO)! Good luck!
