*Microbiology Spring 2012*

Published

Hello all, I was wondering if anyone will be taking Microbiology in the spring..if so I thought it would be a good idea to start a new thread for the new yr for this particular class. I figured that we can all be able to post questions and answers here regarding the class or just to talk about anything regarding micro.

I will be starting my Micro class on tuesday im going to edison state college in fort myers fl. Im very excited and also a little nervous to be starting school after a semester break.

* I look forward to see who else will be starting micro this spring and I hope we can all be able to help each other out throughout the semester :yeah:

go back to your AP and learn structure of....cytoplasm,nucleoid,ribosomes. Go to youtube and watch videos. you have to do a little bit every day to get it in your head! Good luck!!

I got a 93 on my first lecture test. Lab test this week. We are working on gram stains and simple stains, using the loop and creating cultures in media. I really like my class.

Specializes in EMT.

Momtojosh, I think you just need to take a deep breath and break all your questions up, work on one at a time. I've found that pneumonics work wonders when needing to memorize the information. Also, the word association game really helps!

Example: First glance 'ribosomes' has 'rib' in it which makes me think of meat which is a source of protein, and wha-la ! Ribosomes make protein chains.

With the metric system think back to chemistry and converting moles to grams to atoms, set your problems up that way and cancel out units.

Purplecav, great job on your test you must be proud !

Micro students I have a question:

I'm drawing a concept map for aerobic respiration we have a word bank. Does this sound accurate?

Glycolysis results in the synthesis of 2 ATP and Acetyl-CoA which is used in the krebs cycle which includes substrate-level phosphorylation yielding 2 ATP used in oxidative phosphorylation which includes the electron transport chain and chemiosmosis resulting in 34 ATP.

I'm taking microbiology and A&P 1 this semester. It's challenging but I'm enjoying it. So far so good. I'm kind of sciency anyway so I'm like a kid in a candy store. I have a BS in Physics...lol!

got an 84 on my first micro exam!!....I am SO happy.....as our prof warned us most will fail his first test......class average was 62....

@ MomtoJosh - I know how freaked out you can be for the first test. Whatever you did, it worked! Congrats! I am currently holding an A in my class. We are having a test this week on Metabolism, so I had to review Glycolysis, Krebs and Electron Transport for 5 hours last Sunday. I feel like I am so ready for this test! :barf01:

good luck on your test......i would love to get an A...i will TRY to get an A cause all my other sciences i had As.....but i know i can breathe cause i was accepted to the program allready...so if i gets Bs on all test...i will be happy....this is a hard class....esp when i last had bio 30+ yrs ago...yikes...i am reviewing more than anything....

at our school micro isnt required til the 3rd semester of nursing school.....but i wanted to get ALL sciences out of the way before i start the RN program....

It is very wise to get all of the sciences out of the way. There is a boy in my class who is in his 2nd sem of nursing WITH micro! CRAZY!!! Thank you for the luck!

Is this semester over yet?!! I hate my micro class so much :(. It's not the material I don't like it's the format of the class. We meet only once a week strictly for labs...there is no lecture class. Basically I have to read the chapters on my own and teach myself. Test is 100 questions on 6 chapters at a time...no study guide. The teacher is horrible at emailing back and gives absolutely no direction in the class. And what makes this all more frustrating is I didnt even voluntarily enroll in this class. The one I originally was in got cancelled and this was the only other one available :(So needless to say, I'm counting down the days until may.

hey guys! i think my class is going pretty well. i got 115 on the first test (90 plus 25 points for the bonus questions) and a 93 on the second test (68 plus 25 points bonus).. all i can say is i'm so thankful for the bonus questions! lol... i have an a in lab too i think like a 93 or something so far. the material is getting a lot harder though so we will see how this next test goes its not this monday coming up but the one after this one.

doing the study guides and reading the chapter summaries help me a lot.

i am very sorry to hear your troubles. i wish everyone had my teacher. she tests from info on the power points, refers to figures or tables in the book. she's amazing! she goes over concepts over and over and over during lecture to make sure we know the processes. i got a 103.75% on the last test. she tells us what to study for the test, so you are not studying stuff that is not pertinent. good luck to everyone, no matter how hard things are right now! we are in for a storm come fall with nursing!!!

would you suggest taking anatomy and physiology before micro? That is what my advisor told me....

You need AP1 before taking Micro. You can take AP2 after Micro. That is what I am doing. I took AP1 last semester and am in Micro now. Some of what you learned in AP1 will come back in Micro when it comes to learning about Eukariotic cells.

:thankya:Check your schools requirements and look at the pre-req for Micro. :thankya:

This is what the course description says for Micro at my school:

Prerequisite(s): BIO-1410 Anatomy and

Physiology of Domestic Animals I; or BIO-2331 Anatomy and Physiology I; or

BIO-1500 Principles of Biology I; or BIO-1050 Human Biology and BIO-105L Human

Biology Lab and BIO-1100 Introduction to Biological Chemistry; or departmental

approval: comparable knowledge or skills

I hope that helps! :)
