Hello all, I was wondering if anyone will be taking Microbiology in the spring..if so I thought it would be a good idea to start a new thread for the new yr for this particular class. I figured that we can all be able to post questions and answers here regarding the class or just to talk about anything regarding micro.
I will be starting my Micro class on tuesday im going to edison state college in fort myers fl. Im very excited and also a little nervous to be starting school after a semester break.
* I look forward to see who else will be starting micro this spring and I hope we can all be able to help each other out throughout the semester
I am in microbio this semester and so far it's not too bad (first test is on Monday!!) a really good website is khanacademy.org. The bacteria and virus videos are super helpful, even to just get a good basic understanding :)
^^ Thanks one of my classmates told me about this website they said its really good. I haven't checked it out as yet but I will because I have a test on monday Chap 1-3-4-5 .
I love my prof. We already did a plate of bacteria from our shoe, cell, etc. Also we did broths and slants of different things like E. coli and a few others. We learned about the scope & using high power with oil. In lecture we are learning about differences between eukaryotes & prokaryotes. First test already coming up!

how does your prof test? Our prof informed us that all his test are essay type questions.....AAHHH....my worst type....i go blank...
he does give a list of "potential" questions that he uses though which i think will help...and he said he can NOT stray from this list....he posted all 4 potential questions list already....there are about 20-30 questions he can use on each list....some are give mes...some are AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.....
ok...how does one overcome these type of questions....i know people like these cause they can write and go on and on....but for me...i go blank....everything flies right out of my head.....i started making flash cards...and i read all chapters...i even record the lectures....so i hope to get over this hurdle in due time.....

I am using Nester Microbiology 6th edition. I supplement it with my AP book; Seeley AP 9th ed. I love the Seeley book. It has really great pictures and explanations.
Knowing what books we are using may help assist others

A Photographic Atlas for the Microbiology Laboratory by Leboffe & Pierce
The professor that has been teaching the only microbiology class on campus took medical leave so I have a new professor that was interviewed for the job a week before our first lecture. So far two weeks in there is a lot of disorganization and confusion ! She has never taught medical microbiology before.

* I have taken my first test on Mon it was alright. it was on chap 1-5 he gave answers too 40% of the test on review sheets and 10% we had to know.. I have them saved on my computer if you would like me to email them to you maybe they can help you out with studying. I find that using a recorder in class doesn't help much imo its best to just take notes on whats important.there is also a website where you can be able to use virtual flash cards and you can also view other people flash cards and use them to study...website is quizlet.com-Hope that helps
where did all the micro takers go??....lets get this up and running again.....
how is everyone doing?....I have my first test and I am SO dreading it!!!.......I am not sure what the prof wants.....he is just spitting out info in lecture and spitting it out at a tremendous amount of speed......he has a list of 22 "potential" test questions....he cant veer from this list....he says we need to know everything on the list...and he will choose his questions....sounds easy right......it should be....but I cant remember everything.......some stuff i know....not nearly enough though......
like one is this......know the metric system and how to convert within...ok....we never went over anything in class about the metric system.....just that us americans are slow to catch on that this system works....he is canadaian....i know that a bacteria is small micro meter small....and i know i should know this....
another is describe the role and structure of....cytoplasm,nucleoid,ribosomes,inclusions.....ok...easy right.....but not for ME...i can not grasp this stuff.....i read about it....i write it all out...i listen to it again from my recorder...i find it somewhat interesting at times.....but it will not stick!!
so...needless to say....i am very afraid of this test and the whole class at that....i dont think i am going to pass....i made A's in
A & p 1 and 2.....
he even said to us you are going to be abit freaked out when you get your first test....it will be a bunch of questions with a whole lot of white space.......but hey...at least i gave you a list to go from....thanks...
