*Microbiology Spring 2012*

Published

Hello all, I was wondering if anyone will be taking Microbiology in the spring..if so I thought it would be a good idea to start a new thread for the new yr for this particular class. I figured that we can all be able to post questions and answers here regarding the class or just to talk about anything regarding micro.

I will be starting my Micro class on tuesday im going to edison state college in fort myers fl. Im very excited and also a little nervous to be starting school after a semester break.

* I look forward to see who else will be starting micro this spring and I hope we can all be able to help each other out throughout the semester :yeah:

Thanks for the tip on Khan Academy. It really helps with what I am doing this semester in biology. Every little bit helps, and having material presented in different ways really helps me because we all learn things differently.

His videos are amazing, are they not?? So detailed and I love the fact that you can stop it and write notes of your own! I am so glad to help! Please spread the word on him to your classmates. He is amazing!! :loveya:

Not to mention the lab (which we are tested on as well on the off weeks of our lecture tests) have a lot of things you need to know as well; the Gram stain, Acid Fast Stain, Capsule Stain, Endospore stain. Some are similar, but some use different ingredients and different methods. :uhoh3: When you are memorizing 7 different experiments, they all get meshed together and you forget which one uses the Acid Alcohol and which one doesnt, which one uses a heat fixed slide and which one doesnt..... :bluecry1: See what I mean?

AP isnt going to have any of that, so you are better off with AP in the summer (IMO)! Good luck!

I think it would depend on how short the summer term is. If A&P is a tough subject, I would rather spread it out over a full term instead of cramming it into the summer. My school's summer term is only 1-2 months long!

Imagine my dismay.... I took my micro test on 6 freakin chapters. A lot of information! So I say a prayer at the beginning of the test and start taking it. Zip, Zip, Zip... I got this! Awesome! Zoom zoom, done!.... Usually after I am all done, I go thru the test again and recheck my answers. Sometimes I change some, sometimes I dont. This time I didnt rehash the whole thing because then I start second guessing myself, so I left it as it was.

I took out a piece of paper because there were some questions that I wasnt sure of, so I wrote them down to check them. There were 6 that I questioned and 4 that I got wrong. I was pretty happy knowing that I GOT the extra credit so I should have about a 92%. :yeah: So that got me thinking... what about the ones I think are correct and are NOT correct... :uhoh3:

My teacher is awesome in that she grades the test after our lab while we stay and wait. I wanted to cry. I got an 88.5%. On only ONE question, which i KNEW the answer, I put down the WRONG answer. That would have gotten me a 90.5%. I was so upset. I am still getting a 93 in the class, but jeeze, that is such a punch in the gut.

:banghead:

Studying all week for a lab test on dilutions. FUNNNN! :nono:

I am taking Micro in the summer....wonder if this is a good idea. I really want to get it over with before I start the nursing program (HOPEFULLY in the fall). So far I've taken biology and A&P I, both with As, and am making an A in A&P II right now, but I'm pretty worried. Any suggestions to keep me from freaking out before I even start?! :bowingpur

Take it in the summer. What other class would you take with Micro?

I would not suggest taking it later with Nursing. That is (from what I have heard from others) the worst thing you can do. You cant do Nursing and pour yourself into Micro. I am in Micro now and it takes a lot of time. I will tell you that you have an advantage since you have already taken Bio and AP1. At least with my class, my teacher is teaching things that are taught in a bio class (I had never taken a bio class, I didnt have time) If you are a student like me, which sounds like you are, you will be fine with Micro in the summer. They tend to scale it down a bit because of the time constraint. You will be fine. I say take it! Good luck to you! Also, if you would like, I can send you some online resources that help me study. Private message me your email if you are interested.

I'm thinking I'll just do Micro. I did a full time summer last year (12 credits) and while I loved the work load, I think a break would do me good. Plus focusing on Micro seems a wise idea. Online resources would be AWESOME!! I don't think I can use private messages yet, I haven't post enough it seems.

So I am not contradicting myself, regarding previous posts, I would take Micro in the summer rather than taking it WITH nursing classes.

if you have the choice and time to take Micro and AP2 BEFORE nursing, I would suggest taking AP2 in summer and doing a 16 week (full semester in fall or spring) Micro.

That was my thoughts exactly. They seem to be time consuming classes (A&P II definitely is!) and to mix that with nursing classes and clinicals seems to be asking for more stress. Thank you so very much for your advice! :)
