Hello. Anyone out there taking Micro this semester? I thought I would start a thread for us to talk and discuss microbiology for the semester. I am looking forward to it.
What textbook are you going to be using? I am using Microbiology: With Diseases by Taxonomy - Robert Bauman. I am picking it up tomorrow.
I think it will be a great semester!
no lies - micro is easier than anatomy, physiology, and chemistry and I took it during the summmer. Although there is more conceptual stuff than anatomy, u also got to memorize a fair amount of stuff. For now I would study like gram staining, diff bet. eukaroyote vs prokaryote, and start memorizing some bacterias (incub. temp, color, unique growth pattern, etc...) for the lab exam. BRING A CAMERA.
Agree with you whole heartedly!

Thanks for the advice and boost. I sit here so terrified of getting through this micro class for the next 14 weeks. We have only covered the first 2 chapters (intro to micro and chemical properties, respectively) so far but of course it's also respectively very basic and review for me. A casual glance at the other chapters to follow sometimes makes me get a panic attack.
Based on what you stated, since I got all A's in chemistry, A&P 1 and 2, this class should not break me either? Well, I will try to keep this in mind!
Carpe Diem!
^ yes dude if you finished anatomy and physiology plus you have the chemistry background then micro will only be moderately difficult. Sure, you are going to have to learn some new stuff like the lac operon but most of the stuff is pretty easy. The hardest thing for me was the labs...conceptually the stuff was easy....I just struggled in the beginning b/c my lab partners did everything (inoculating, streak plating, and what not) so I would brush up on that stuff and not let 1 person in your lab do all of that stuff b/c u will need to know how to do it during the unknown.
I found these to be pretty helpful reads only to give you the gist of what's going to be covered. I found that so far it's following the pattern of my class and if I read these before I start reading my own textbook chapters I seem to get a better feel for things. Good luck!http://www.cliffsnotes.com/study_guide/Microbiology.topicArticleId-8524.html
Sorry for the bump. I just wanted to say thanks for the web site for micro Paco !
Yes, you are going to be taking pictures of the bacteria or fungi through the microscopes. You guys are going to do like India ink staining, wet mounts, acid-fast, and what not so need to be able to identify the stains and the bacteria via microscope. You will also need to take pictures of the growth medium such as the streak plates, test tubes, and so on so that you will be able to identify the unique growth patterns of the specific bacteria with the naked eye. hope that helps. I would also take pictures of procedural stuff b/c you might be tested on that as well. Micro is a really fun class and I learned everything by myself b/c my teacher was a b**ch and sucked at teaching.

I am taking Micro this spring 2010. I am in the book Microbiology An Introduction ninth edition by Tortora, Funke and Case. I would love to be part of this thread! Thanks for the invite!
Next week we are going to be studying microbial metabolism. This will prove a challenge as I am starting to read the chapter and already am scratching my head. I do want to understand it, so I am dedicating many hours to it. Ugh!!
Someone at my college who took my professor last semester told me that we should study that chapter on microbial metabolism especially well, as it threw many people for a loop on quizzes and tests. I'm scared! ... I hope people on here are free to discuss difficult concepts, let's try to get through this together!
