Microbiology-Spring 2008

Published

I was hoping to start a "sticky" for those of us facing micro this spring. I've done (and kind of enjoyed) A&P I and II but am nervous about this course. If anyone finds any good links, has Q&As or hints to share, etc., could we add them here? I have seen other posts about micro, but only by doing a search and couldn't find a dedicated thread. If there is one, point me in the right direction and I'll shut up. LOL!

Happy New Year everyone!

I am on my 2nd day of micro for the summer semester and we already have a test tomorrow...so we have covered two weeks of material in 2 days and its goin to make me crazy by the end of the 4 weeks i dont have time for anything the only reason im on here is because im eating at same time but then its back to studying.

Hey join us on the Summer 2008 Micro thread!

Yes I already have a quiz on Wednesday and have only had one class!

Specializes in ICU.

We are in our second week of micro and already had two tests. First one I passed with an A and we took our second one today, hoping to get the grade tomorrow. I can't wait! Don't like waiting for grades *lol*. Our teacher is very stricked, he locks his doors, if you talk you are out. Actually I like it that way, no one bothering you during lecture, not interupting 'cause someone is late again. Love his way of teaching, never knew glycolysis can be understood this easy. Well, like he said teachers don't want to make it easy for us!!!

Starting viruses tomorrow...

Also next week I should find out if I got into the RN program or not.:yeah:

nurztobe congratulations. i know you are well into your core part of your program now. may you share with me your micro notes. thank you.

Well gang,

I just finished my 4 week Micro class yesterday and all I can say is DANG! I squeeked, 90, out with an A. We had our written final, 250 cumulative question exam on Thursday. Our lab final started Thursday and ended Friday. We had to do a simple stain, gram stain (E.coli and Strep), a strep test, and a Enterotube (E. coli). It was a stressful and long 2 days.

Nursing classes officially begin Monday and I CANNOT wait! It is going to be hard, 16 months, but I am ready for the challenge.

GOOD LUCK to each of you in Micro.

My first micro instructor was in her first year. She just begin teaching. She was previously employed as a microbiologist. She was terrible. I had a 3 hour lecture once a week and a 2 hour lab as well. All the A student were failing her class. The tests were horrid. I held a C but I dropped it. I couldn't go another 3 hour class because it was the most boring thing I have ever done in my life. I practically memorized each chapter and still couldn't get an A on the tests. I took it the next semester with another instructor and got a B.

Mommycakers,

What is/was your Immaculata online Micro class like? Did you have to purchase a microscope? Write term papers?

thanks,

Diane

I know this post is almost a year old now but i am a SAHM also and will be taking Micro in the spring 09 and wanted to know if you have any advice for me. I have a 6 yr old , 4 yr old, and a 3 mth old. This is the only class I am taking in the spring... thank you for your time!

i loved microbiology. i took mine this summer and i loved it. i think that since it's so hands on and interesting that you won't have trouble studying for it. good luck!!

thank you... i am looking forward to taking it but was also really nervous. It makes me feel better you saying you loved it and should not have any problems with studying....thanks!!

Well, there's half your problem right there (the terrible instructor is probably the other half). Micro is one of those things where memorizing everything is useless. The main thing to gather from the class (aside from the all important aseptic technique-seriously learn it above all else), is more understanding the concepts of whats going on. I had the opportunity to serve as a teachers aide for micro this last semester and when grading papers, I could always tell the students who were relying mainly on trying to memorize everything. Let me tell you, its really not an efficient use of your time (you'll have to study longer, and you'll likely be more stressed out worrying you'll forget something). You're better off asking yourself "why?". "Why does this result occur? Why do the bacteria need this particular enzyme? How does this contribute to pathogenicity?" etc, etc.

If you can explain the why's of everything, then you're much less likely to forget the information.

[obviously, since you've already passed, this doesn't matter so much to you anymore... but for students who have yet to take this class, seriously, go the extra mile to really understand the how and why and you'll get so much more out of this class.]

yes this does help someone like me who hasn't taken micro.... i take mirco this spring....yeah!!!

thanks for the advice!!!

Good luck with the class. Honestly, if you don't think of it as scary or super difficult, it can be a really cool class, and the lab portion is waaaaay more interesting than physio (probably because half the lab excersises were done on a computer program:yawn:)...seriously one of my favorite classes I've ever taken.

Hi,

I am also taking Micro this spring, really hoping it's not as hard as most people say it is. Good Luck!!
