I was hoping to start a "sticky" for those of us facing micro this spring. I've done (and kind of enjoyed) A&P I and II but am nervous about this course. If anyone finds any good links, has Q&As or hints to share, etc., could we add them here? I have seen other posts about micro, but only by doing a search and couldn't find a dedicated thread. If there is one, point me in the right direction and I'll shut up. LOL!
Happy New Year everyone!
sounds like you are a smartie so it won't "weed" you out. I hear the same thing about A&PI up here. Did you already take Chem 101? I have to take it in the Fall because the CC decided to require it for NS as well. They used to take 1 yr HS chem but they decided to drop that. I am bummed. I hear College Chem 101 is brutal..it's been a while since in was in HS so I don't remember ANY of it. I bought a Chem for Dummies books but it isn't clicking super well. I know lectures are helpful so I'm counting on that. I prefer to learn by professor "showing" / "examples" over just reading it in the Text. I am very determined to be an RN someday so I will find a way to understand.

For now I dont have to take Chemistry, but I eventually have to for my BSN. I will take it this fall if for some reason I dont get accepted. It is not a requirement for my ADN program, but I do want to knock some of those BSN pre-req's (bc I have to do them regardless once I bridge over).
You will be fine!! Just think you can do it, be realistic and just KNOW that you might have to work harder for this class to get a good grade. Fall of '07 was my first semester back to school. My husband was at home recovering from a horrible car accident so I had to put my school on hold. Well I wasnt confident coming back... I was real hard on myself so my grades came out OK. Def. not A's. This semester I pulled myself together and well I kept positive... you would be suprised what your attitude towards things can do. A positive attitude, prayer and a little faith got me through where I am now. Thank the LORD! :yeah::typing:nuke:
This is such a long thread, I haven't been able to do more than skim at this point, so I apologize if my question has already been asked. But here goes.... Are there any websites or resources for learning to do dilutions problems?
I have a homework assignment that is all about dilutions, finding the concentration of bacteria in solution and that sort of thing, but I have no frame of reference, she didn't really explain it to us, and I haven't seen anything in the text as yet explaining it. I haven't taken chemistry yet, it's not an absolute pre requisite for micro at my CC, and it's been YEARS since I took college algebra, so that's why this is kicking my butt.
Thanks in advance for your help. :)
I just found this website and it looks so wonderful! This is my first post, yeah for me! I just finished Microbiology and have to say that although it was hard I enjoyed it very much. Our class consisted of all future nursing students so the teacher geared it more toward bacteria of the body, instead of the environment. I loved the lab portion, it was so interesting to see what the actual bacteria looked like that invades our body! Hope everyone had a good semester, and good luck on finals!
Great words of encouragement, thank you TXGRL! I have decided I can't worry too much, just take one day at a time and I will get there someday! thank you for your support. You are right, positive attitiude, faith, and determination are key! Everything happens for a reason and sometimes we have to face some tough times to have a moment of clarity. That's what happened to me and now I'm back at school after being at home with my kids for 9 1/2 yrs. I love them dearly but I also know I have to be able to help out in supporting our family financially. So, I am taking it slow so I can get A's. One day, god willing, I will be able to say I'm an RN. I didn't know what I wanted to do when I was 18-19 yrs old out of high school and just went to college for 2 years before I stopped and starting working full time and met my DH. Now I know and I am passionate about it. It feels good to know and be determined. It's a long road at this rate, but I am excited. Thanks to everyone here at allnurses, you are all so supportive, it's refreshing.:heartbeat:D:saint:
Hi all! i just finished A&P 2 w/ an A- woohoo!! not so bad...all those sleepless nights paid off. anyway, I wanted to find out what book you guys used in microbio...and if you happen to have used Foundations in Microbiology by Kathleen Talaro, 6th edition, ISBN #
9780072994896 and would like to sell the book
kindly give me a buzz --- really need it badly for summer school.
any pointers and tips for this class would be greatly appreciated as well!! goodluck to y'all!!
have a great summer!
nursewannabe, congrats on your A in A&P! Well done!!
For micro, I did not use the same book you will be using but if you can find a copy of your book that has a supplemental CD rom with it, that could be very useful. Our book had a CD with practice tests and quizzes for every chapter, and animations that really helped with things like viral replication, bacterial metabolism and DNA.
I loved this class! The labs are interesting and relevant too. There is a lot of material covered but if you review some every day and ask for help if you need it, you will do just fine.
Hope that helps. Good luck!

I agree, it is such a long thread. Just finished Micro lab this semester having taken the lecture the semester before. Dilutions was in our finals cause we bombed on it as a class in midterm. I can't point out a site for this specific problem but I frequently visit http://www.austincc.edu/microbugz/index.html it has pictures of common lab exercises for microbiology.
As for the dilution problem, as I understand it---the starting concentration for antiobiotic is halved every time you use another tube. for the math part, I either divide the previous amount by 2 or do a fraction/cross mutiply deal to find the new concentration.
Hope you do well.

Yes, this is a pre-req for my local CC Adn program. It is the only school that i know of in my area that does this. WEIRD! They do it as a weed out class. If you can make it through this class you can make it through the program; well, so they say!
