Microbiology : Lesser Evil

Published

So I know most people recommend not taking 2 sciences together. But I'm considering taking A&P 2 with Micro next semester.

I will be applying to start the AS nursing program in my school for next fall. Applications are due December and they notify by March. So basically this semester's GPA is all that matters. That way I will be done with my sciences BEFORE I begin my nursing program.

So am I correct in thinking that the lesser of 2 evils would be to take 2 sciences together vs taking Micro during my first semester of nursing school?

I'm thinking this also jives with my back up plan of applying to 2 other BSN programs in the area if I don't get into my schools ASN program because Micro is a prerequisite for at least one of them.

I actually like science. When things click and I understand concepts I sometimes do a happy dance . Lol. I'm doing very well in A&P 1 despite working p/t and having 2 young kids not in school.

I took micro and A&P II together and I didn't think it was that bad. It Was a lot of work....but not impossible by any means. I would say take it with A&P II instead of the first semester of nursing school

I say go for it. If you could actually get a seat for both classes then all the better. I had a difficult time enrolling in micro at my local school since it's so ******* popular I had to go somewhere else 40 mins away from home. I don't think micro is an extremely hard class , it is doable with another class. you must definitely study daily and read ahead.

I took micro and a&p 1 in the same quarter and lived! So it is totally doable with a&p 2! BTW what state do you live in that doesn't require micro BEFORE NS?! All of my sciences were in order to even apply to schools!

Taking A&P 2 with Micro is way easier than trying to do Micro during Nursing school. I took 17 credits in one semester before applying to nursing school and still ended up with a 4.0 in all. It's definitely do-able if you stay organized. I did Physiology (your equivalent of A&P2), Micro, Micro Lab, Pharmacology, Human Growth/Development and Intro to Health Professions. Get yourself a good planner and stay ahead of your work and you can get it done.

I couldn't imagine taking additional courses in nursing school.

I live in Northeast PA. It's a community college, basically the only prerequisites are sciences during HIGH SCHOOL, GPA, and PAX RN. However I really believe they do it to entice a large number of students to attend school here. There are over 1500 applicants for 150 seats. But my advisor told me that sometimes they don't even use all the spots if they feel to pool is not worthy. But it must work because the NCLEX pass rates have never been below 85 and it's been in the 90s the last 2 years

I can't live without my planner. I take what I consider to be my "unimportant" classes online and I'm 2-4 weeks ahead on all of those. I can't not read ahead before going to A&P. I'm not going to sit there lost like the majority of my class, I read, take notes, use all the online tools that came with my book, and usually understand most of it before stepping into lecture. It makes for a very boring lecture but I rather be bored than lost

Just a question, did you take biology in high school or college biology? I took college biology before I took Microbiology and felt like a majority of the classes were similar. The labs were different of course but we started at the same place for each class. I took Microbiology, Pathophysiology, and A&P 2 all in the same semester and felt like it wasn't bad. I had the time to devote and got through them with A's.

If you are science oriented and have done good prior to this I wouldn't worry about doing this. Just devote the time necessary.

If you previously received A's in your science classes without much effort, then I would take the two classes together. Here is how I view it: If little effort = A, Then logic would dictate that two classes would require slightly more effort to yield the same results; unless acted upon an outside force. The outside force being, time, family, illness, etc...

I took both classes in the same semester and it wasn't bad. In fact, there was some overlap between the two classes since A&P II is more physiology than anatomy (at least that was the case in my program).

I'm taking both now and it's very manageable. I study about two hours a day and that's been plenty. Nursing classes are hard enough, I wouldn't want to add anything else on! :) good luck
