Hi all!! I have 3 more prereq's to take...A&P I, II, and Micro. My question is do you recommend taking Micro with A&P I OR II? I love this website and get so motivated. I will be applying for the Nursing program at Moraine Valley Community College and am SOO nervous. But one day at a time right?! Thanks for your help.

Sorry, I have no answer to this but look forward to seeing the replies you get to this question! Because I was wondering the same! But I have a question for you. How did you do in Chemistry? I have yet to pass Chemistry and then I will have these three classes left to do also. Thanks!

Have you taken biology at the cellular level ? If so, you should be fine taking micro with either of your A&P classes. Micro is tough but it's just because you'll be looking at the structure and behavior of stuff that is smaller than a cell. In A&P, you'll be concentrating on cells and things bigger than cells. For me, the most difficult part of micro was understanding how different microbes replicate.
Thanks for both of your replies. I haven't taken chemistry as it isnt a required prereq. for the ADN. I have my Associates degree in another health field, but I literally woke up and said I've put off Nursing long enough, so most of my classes transferred except for the Sciences, since its been 8 yrs since I've taken them. I never had to take micro before. Im nervous because Micro is such a different "animal". I feel so old going back and like I'm learning all over again because its been 8 years. Maybe I'll take one class at a time, but say I DOOO get accepted for Fall 2011..that will leave me with taking my Micro along with my Nursing classes. I wanted to take A/P I in spring, and A/P II in summer..then throw in Micro in one of those semesters, then I go into the Nursing program with all my pre-reqs out of the way. O my dilemma!!

In our school, your GPA in A&P1/2 and micro has big impact on application point, so most student take these classes one at a time. I took micro and a&p1 together, it was tough, time consuming and a lot of memorization. I passed though. I find chemistry a lot easier because it is more on computation.

At my school you were not allowed to take them together since A&PI was the pre-reqs for II and II was the pre-reqs for micro..

At my school AP1 is a prereq for Micro so I am taking Micro with AP2. It might be advantageous to take AP1 alone and get your feet wet and then take the two sciences in the second semester.
In our school, you the "suggested schedule" only says that A/P I must be taken prior to starting the Nursing program, the rest (A/P II and Micro) is mixed into the other semesters seperately, along with your Nursing classes.
I was an old lady mom with only cell biology (my CC made up a class that mixed a little chem with cell structure and DNA) and the first of 3 A&P classes under my belt. I took micro with A&P II and though it was time consuming in terms of class time and homework but very doable. If you were good at learning 8 years ago, you will be good at learning now.
Of course if you are working full-time and have a kids you are raising on top of all this, no, I wouldn't suggest taking both together.
My school puts out an example schedule and it is not useful since you need to take all the science, psych, and nutrition classes to get enough "points" to be accepted. They need to toss that schedule !! At my school there is only one micro course and the lecture time conflicts with the nursing classes and clinicals. Cracks me up.

Interesting how different schools do different things. At my school, A&P I and II are pre-reqs to Micro so you would not be able to take them together. My strategy was to take one science class at a time so I would get the best grade possible. I never took 2 science classes at the same time. Not saying it can't be done, but that was my game plan - it worked. My plan was not just get through these classes but to get As if possible in all or most.
Having said that, I'm taking Micro now. Only a month into the semester and its not as time consuming as A&P to study. Not saying its a cake walk. But I spent way way way more time studying for A&P and I'm glad I was able to put all my focus into it to get As.
I am working full-time until I get accepted into the program and I also have an 8 yr old. Thanks for all the responses..I did have good grades 8 yrs ago and I am taking a pre-req Psych class right now to kinda get back into the swing of things. But the A/P will definately be a change since it's my first science class in YEEAARRSS!! Im totally ready to study and throw myself into it but soo scared to take 2 at a time.

I would do A&P 1 alone, then A&P 2 and Micro. I think you'd be more successful if you got the feel for A&P 1 by itself first, that way the next two won't be such a shock, you will have learned how much time you need to put in, how to study for these kinds of classes, etc.
At my school you can take A&P or Micro first, or simultaneously. They just started a new rule though that before you can sign up for either A&P or Micro, you either need to have had a regular bio class with a C or better within the last 5 years, or pass a new biology proficiency test. I guess a lot of people taking these classes shot themselves in the foot walking into A&P without even knowing the basics first.
We also need chemistry to get in the program, but it's not counted as part of our GPA pre-reqs.
