MGH IHP Direct Entry NP 2015

Published

Hi folks! I couldn't find a post about the 2015 application cycle and I'm interested to see how other people are feeling about it. Since so many other schools have November deadlines, I've already finished up my MGH app (save my letters...) and submitted it.

I'm going after the psych direct-entry NP program. One of the nurses I work with had been in their NP program and recommended it very strongly. My own NP went to Yale and, weirdly enough, told me she hated Yale and wished she went to MGH. She then raved about all the MGH NPs she works with and how great they are. I'm applying to Yale anyway, since who knows what might happen, but I am reeeeeally hoping to get in!

They ask if you've worked for any Partners hospitals...anyone know if this actually affects your chances? Or what the estimated acceptance rates are by program?

Hi @Bostonhopeful!

Thanks! Yes I agree with ceddybear in regards to the personal statement - mine was kick ass as well & I felt as if it was one of the stronger parts of my application. Here are my "stats" or whatever people are calling them since you were curious!

GRE: Nothing Amazing. I scored 149 verbal 144 math, took it twice & my scores did not change at all. I did score a 5 both times on my GRE writing which put me in the 93rd percentile, so I was really strong in that area.

Undergrad GPA: 3.17 & BS in Human Development. I went to a pretty big science school, not sure how much that

helped. (UC Davis in CA)

Pre-Req GPA:~3.4. Not sure on exact because classss changed for each school & I didn't calculate out for each. I earned B's mostly in chem, microbio & development classes. I had A's in my anatomy & physio classes though. I had no C's.

I have no professional or volunteer health experience actually. But I consistently had several part-time jobs while going through school & doing my pre-Reqs, so I have a lot of work-school combo experience. I've been a nanny for kids all ages for over 5 years, I've worked in Recreation since I was 16 & have over 4 years of leadership & community outreach experience. I also lived with my grandma for 12 years & got exposed to a lot of medical stuff through just taking care of her everyday, but the only time I discussed it was during one part of my personal statement.

Recs: I had my anatomy/physio teacher, my supervisor of 8 years & one of the mom's I nanny for write them.

Ok. I think I wrote enough about myself. Lol. Let me know if you have any other questions!

For those that are not from Boston coming next weekend for the open house, keep in mind that the vast majority of Boston is still recovering from essentially a month long blizzard that has crippled the transit system and severely dampened the usual groove of the city. Patiences and understanding will probably be required as you try to get around.

I am in the same situation -- MGH wants their decision so early and I am still waiting to hear back from 4 other school! I went to the open house on Saturday and loved it but I am waiting to deposit because I just want to make sure I am making the right decision.

For me, it's really between MGH and Vanderbilt at this point. I got a really large scholarship from MGH, but I am not from the East Coast, so I did not get to Boston this weekend. Too short-notice/REALLY horrible weather. I'm in the PMHNP program. Any info would be so ridiculously appreciated.

You can find out a lot about MGH's program if you go to the Facebook page. Just search "MGH IHP Direct Entry" and it will show up.

Argh I'm doing the exact same thing - Vandy vs MGH. I keep saying I've made up my mind for MGH but then this nagging sense keeps telling me to look at Vanderbilt again. I haven't been able to go down to Nashville yet, though, so that trip should help make up my mind.

Much better casual music scene in Nashville! That would definitely swing it for me.

Don't you have to decide by tomorrow though?

I too was accepted to MGH's PMHNP program. The main factor standing in my way is the fact that Boston's monthly apartment rental rates are obscene. The only reasonable rates that I can find are about an hour from the MGH Institute. My boyfriend and I cannot justify having to live in a studio apartment for three years. In addition, the weather is certainly not helping MGH's case. I know that it may sound ridiculous, but for us, quality of life is simply a non-negotiable. This is an incredibly difficult decision for me, as the appeal of a direct entry program with specialization is certainly hard to ignore. However, at this point I am leaning toward attending VCU's Accelerated BSN program and applying to their Psych MSN program following completion of the ABSN. I have already paid the deposit for VCU and hope that I am making the right decision.

Just gave up my spot in the FNP program. Good luck!

Joke's on me! BOTH schools have my deposit money.

ceddybear, good point. I'm curious how a Massachusetts native (no accent, but all of the brash mannerisms) would fit in down there, though.

Hello all,

I am new to this thread and this website in general. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with being on the waitlist previously? Does anyone know how many people are on the waitlist? Any tips for getting accepted off the waitlist? Unfortunately and fortunately, I was waitlisted at MGH and I am just wondering if anyone can provide any tips for possibly getting accepted off the list? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
