Hi folks! I couldn't find a post about the 2015 application cycle and I'm interested to see how other people are feeling about it. Since so many other schools have November deadlines, I've already finished up my MGH app (save my letters...) and submitted it.
I'm going after the psych direct-entry NP program. One of the nurses I work with had been in their NP program and recommended it very strongly. My own NP went to Yale and, weirdly enough, told me she hated Yale and wished she went to MGH. She then raved about all the MGH NPs she works with and how great they are. I'm applying to Yale anyway, since who knows what might happen, but I am reeeeeally hoping to get in!
They ask if you've worked for any Partners hospitals...anyone know if this actually affects your chances? Or what the estimated acceptance rates are by program?
I've talked to three MGH grads, one in MA and two in VT. They all have jobs they love and said the MGH program was good. Two were enthusiastic and said it was a supportive and solid program. One said it was good, though her critique was that it was disorganized. They all went to MGH in the 1990s, though, so their experience is outdated by now. The one who said it was disorganized went when the program was just starting. I agree with a previous poster that it seems like getting a job is not a problem, in or out of state. I understand that VT is fairly saturated with NPs, but grads I've spoken with from UVM's program have had no problem getting jobs and at least one recent FNP grad had multiple job offers before she finished.
That said, all of this is second- and third-hand info and some of it is dated, so it's probably a good idea to speak with recent grads.
ginger_99,
Congrats on your acceptance to MGH! I will be applying this next year for the Women's Health/Adult Gerontology track and I was wondering if you could tell me about your background (grades, GRE, work/volunteer experience, etc). I would love any advice you might have for me to make sure I am a strong applicant!
Thanks!
Hey bostonhopeful, I didn't apply for that track, but I did get into MGH and UMass for acute care. I think a big plus my application had was work experience in the OR of one of the major Partners hospitals. On top of that my personal statement was baller. I think the best thing you can do for yourself is work on your personal statement more than anything else since that's the one place where you can truly separate yourself from every other candidate.

I'm still waiting to hear from 3 schools, but I was lucky to be accepted to my top choice at UMass Med. I think the biggest thing to think about is where MGH ranks in your school choices and then consider if you can afford giving a deposit to them knowing that you may still choose to go elsewhere. For example, if MGH is your #2 school and you have the extra $500, I'd pay the deposit just for peace of mind. But if it's your #5 school and you've already been accepted to #2, 3, and 4, I'd say keep the $500 and consider paying the deposit for another school while you wait to hear from others.
