Hi folks! I couldn't find a post about the 2015 application cycle and I'm interested to see how other people are feeling about it. Since so many other schools have November deadlines, I've already finished up my MGH app (save my letters...) and submitted it.
I'm going after the psych direct-entry NP program. One of the nurses I work with had been in their NP program and recommended it very strongly. My own NP went to Yale and, weirdly enough, told me she hated Yale and wished she went to MGH. She then raved about all the MGH NPs she works with and how great they are. I'm applying to Yale anyway, since who knows what might happen, but I am reeeeeally hoping to get in!
They ask if you've worked for any Partners hospitals...anyone know if this actually affects your chances? Or what the estimated acceptance rates are by program?
Joke's on me! BOTH schools have my deposit money.ceddybear, good point. I'm curious how a Massachusetts native (no accent, but all of the brash mannerisms) would fit in down there, though.
I've decided on Vanderbilt. I'm from "Michiana", which is a part of Indiana that has a heavy Michigan culture, so I'm politically liberal, temperamentally calm, friendly, but not chatty. I was honestly really concerned about southern culture, too. The truth is, though, it's a large city and it is diverse. Yes, you are in the Bible Belt, and that is often apparent, but most of my current friends who live there are from the East Coast, and they all seem to love it for a plethora of reasons. Southerners seem pretty brash to me (forcing hospitality on you in a very loud and excitable manner), lol, so you may fit in extra-well.
If you haven't talked to the faculty from either place yet, I would recommend. I talked to both Vandy and MGHIHP faculty. All were incredibly gracious (it didn't narrow my choice down due to that...everyone was so friendly and helpful), but it helped me work out my future professional goals and which school could cater to my interests best. MGH could not offer me clinical placements relating to my interests in the city of Boston. They found me a maybe in Rhode Island, and, although I appreciate their effort (for a student that hadn't even committed yet, no less), I don't want to be traveling around the East Coast to get the clinical experience I want (I'm interested in the Consultation Liaison Psych NP role). Both schools were so good to me, though. It was the worst best decision I've had to make.

Thats what I'm coming around to see, too. Speak with current students at any school you are considering is the best advice I got and the thing that's helped me the most. MGH grads do get good job placements in the area but it doesn't seem to help much getting to PhD programs (yes they have their own DNP but school name does unfortunately seem to matter in the PhD game). Speaking with a current student reassured me that Vandy is quick but it's not rushed.
But both have pros and cons for sure! If the DNP is your goal then MGH is probably best bet. You're right to consider long term goals. Maybe see you at orientation 😉
Hi Jillybean,
I'm the FNP program at MGH. Which track did you apply to? For whatever reason (I think it has to do with clinical placements), some of tracks have much fewer spots (specifically, Family) and might explain why you were wait listed. I think you should definitely keep in touch with the admissions office. I will say that a number of people in our current program were wait listed last year, and didn't find out that they were off of the list until about a week before school started. So, keep that in mind for planning purposes.
Hey suesueyale
I do not know whether any of the wait-listed applicants have received calls. Which specialty are you hoping for? I recently gave up my spot in the psychiatric mental health NP program. I also know of a few people who have declined their offers for the FNP and Acute Care specialties. Good Luck to you! I hope everything works out.
Got off the wait list on March 31 and accepted the offer already. Congrats to those who got in and Good luck to those still on the waitlist.
I'm on the waitlist still waiting to hear back! Did the school call or email you? Did they give you a deadline to reply by or you had to accept on the spot?
Hello current MGH students,
I wanted to follow-up with any of you and see if you'd be interested in meeting up. I've been accepted into the MGH IHP program for Fall 2016 and I will be at the Visiting Day on Saturday, March 5th. I'm from California and haven't visited Boston before. I'd love to chat and hear your experiences so help with my decision making.
Thanks so much,
Kara
Hi,
I'm applying this year and wondered if any of you who started last year would be willing to share your experiences? Specifically can you tell me what time classes start and end the first year? I am trying to figure out child care but at the open house they weren't very clear on this
Thank you!

I don't think there's anything you can do at this point. You've done everything you can and need to wait. However, without being annoying, you should keep in contact with the admissions team. Maybe if you're willing to go into another specialty, let them know. If anything, ask this question to the admissions team. They can answer it best :)
