MGH Direct-Entry Nursing 2014

Published

I just sent in my application for MGH Direct-Entry Nursing 2014 and I was hoping to get in touch with other applicants. I applied for the Adult-Gerontology Acute Care NP. The wait is going to kill me! I'm wondering about other people's backgrounds (GPA, GRE scores, experience, etc.) and if anyone has an idea of who MGH accepts. Look forward to hearing from you!

Following epoc's estimates, here are mine for the FNP specialty:

This is just an estimate though since the tuition rate & fees will probably increase next academic year. :uhoh3:

We should ask about the typical allotment for living expenses so we can come up the REAL cost of attending...

This was on their website:

"This Living Expense Allowance is derived from a budget calculated as shown below which is representative of student living expenses for eight months in the Boston area...The current Living Expense allowance (not including tuition and fees) for the eight-month, two-semester loan period is reflected below."

Living Expense Estimate

(e.g. for Fall/Spring or for Summer/Fall)

Loan Fees

205

Room & Board Personal

16,500

Books & Supplies

1,500

Health Insurance

2,800

Transportation

2,400

Total two-semester

Living Expense Allowance

$ 23,405

So $23,405 x 4 = $93,620 for living expenses.

Therefore, $111,057 (tuition/fees) + $93,620 (living expenses) = ~$204,677

Does this sound right to everyone?

i currently live in boston and can say it really depends how many roommates you have. i went to college in the city as well and it really does vary. i have gone from paying 1000 a month to 650... so it is quite a range.

Cal4 have you decided to go to mgh or regis?

i am pretty set on regis, but still looking at my options. i have friends in both programs so ive been talking to them quite a bit to find where i think i will fit best.

Autumnrain, that is an insane number. But I can say that it sounds about right. Like cal4 said, it depends where you rent, how many people you rent with and where you rent. Do you know if the health insurance is given by the school or would we have to apply somewhere on our own?

nmartthi: According to their website, we can either prove we have health insurance that meets the minimum standards for the state via a waiver, or we can enroll in the school's insurance plan. You can find more details about that on their website: Health Insurance for Students - MGH Institute of Health Professions - Boston, MA

For the Living Expense Estimate that I posted above, it seems like the school used its own insurance plan ($1,400 per semester or 4 months) to estimate the health insurance cost.

I was accepted to the acute care track, and I'm having a tough time deciding (the other option right now would be BC). I've heard that MGH uses some online classes- does anyone know about that? Is it true for the main DE Nursing program, or just the prereqs that are online? I really don't think I learn as well online.

Congrats to everyone accepted and good luck to those on the wait list. I got accepted for PNP (anyone else out there?)!! Does anyone know anything about the program other than what we've read online? And also - is there an admitted student's day?! I feel meeting the current staff and students and having the opportunity to ask questions would be hugely beneficial. I emailed admissions but haven't heard anything back yet! Currently deciding between MGH and Emory!

Hey guys, so those negative reviews I was talking about are here: MGH Institute of Health Professions Reviews - Online Degree Reviews ..you may have seen them if you google: "MGH Direct Entry Program Reviews"

I'm not sure how accurate they are and there are only a couple but it still has me weary. If anyone could PM me (not sure how you do this) who knows students in the program it would be great. I feel at a loss as to where to find some accurate opinions of this program because I don't have many connections. At this point, the only way is to talk to some real people!

Thanks for your help in advance!

Also, not sure if any of you are in the Columbia Facebook page or are in your other prospective school groups but it has been infinitely helpful when it comes to talking with each other directly and getting answers on everything. A couple of current students joined the page and they have been amazingly insightful.
