Mesa CC Hesi

U.S.A. Arizona

To anyone who has recently taken the HESI A2 at Mesa...

-Is the calculator available for the entire math section or only for select questions?

-I am so nervous for the grammar section. I've been studying and studying but am only getting slightly higher scores my on practice exams for this section. Will the actual HESI be as nerve racking? This is the only section I am concerned with. I understand the score for this section will be averaged into the composite score overall but I am really worried about blowing it....

Any thoughts to those who have already taken it?

Thank you!

I took the hesi about a year ago and the calculator was available the entire test.

I took it through GCU, the only difference being that GCU requires more sections than the community colleges.

To answer your question about the calculator, Mrs.Bookworm had it right. The calculator is available for all sections.

Regarding your concern with the grammar section, you just have to do your best. Yes, the actual HESI will probably be more nerve wracking, but just take a breath and do the best you can. I barely studied (I'm talking maybe an hour at most) and I got a 90. The key to taking a test is to relax and just do the best you can.

Good luck! :)

Yep - calculator always available. I took mine at Glendale CC - but I have taken tests at other testing tests and if you have never tested anywhere, I just want to warn you to DOUBLE CHECK your calculator math.... watch VERY carefully when you use their calculator. It is a point and click with the mouse calculator, and mine kept double clicking numbers. It was SO annoying. I only got one problem wrong in the math section but after I figured out that it was doing that I was pretty worried about it. Just be very careful through the entire math section when you use the calculator. I seriously did calculations two and three times just to be sure. Doesn't hurt right??

Have you used the Quizlet flashcards for the grammar section? What practice exams are you using? Online or the books..? The grammar section wasn't that difficult, honestly. Study up on all the terms though so you know what each are. There is a thread here at all nurses that has great links to some elementary school websites for grammar terms/uses. I studied those and did the quizes, and did fine. Study the vocabulary on quizlet - if you do a hesi a2 vocab search you'll get a ton of words - study them all and know them. They'll be used in context on the test, and if you know them you'll get 100% pretty easily. The HARDEST part for me on the hesi was the reading comprehension. I got 100% on all my practice tests and was confident I would do fine. Holy cow, it was SUPER hard. I was SO confused, and I seriously was annoyed and guessed on so many. I just had no clue. I think I got the hard test. HA. I only got 70% on my "conclusions" section, and it brought my english composite score down to 93% - obviously that was good enough, but I don't think I prepared enough for that - and I don't think the hesi book they suggest prepares you well enough because I got 100% in that book and the actual exam was much more difficult.

Study hard to get 100% in the sections you know you can, and then do as well as you can in the other sections...and you'll get a great score. GL!

There plenty of online resources for practice of the hesi. Apps you can purchase etc.

I had to take it twice. But the second time my scores went way up.

Fear kept me from taking it 6 months later. Don't waste time.

Just go for it. The faster you get it done the faster you get to put in your application

Good luck!

Thank you for sharing your experience. I am using Elsevier's 3rd Edition HESI Exam Review, McGraw Hills Evolve Reach HESI Practice Test book and a great website called IXL learning. IXL has proven to be a great resources with a lot of practice questions. For example they have a lot of practice with roman numerals which isn't a skill I use like ever. It was easy to learn the 'big' roman numerals in about an hour.

I am shocked about the reading comprehension section. I was least worried about it, until now! I will have to revisit the amount of time I put into studying this section.

I have been putting this test of since the summer thinking I have plenty of time. Now the cutoff to apply without MAT142 is quickly approaching. The new changes to pre- and co-requisities is forcing me to get my act together since the HESI is the last thing I need to complete. Otherwise after 1/31 I must take MAT142 before applying and I don't want to waste another semester. I plan to study my tail off and get the application in the last week of January.

Thanks again!

I was shocked about the reading comprehension section too. Like I said, I did fine with the HESI practice book (same one you're using). Look for something else online, and actually practice it. I got 100% in that section the first time I took it so I didn't study it anymore at all. Big mistake. My overall HESI is 94%, but could have been a tad higher had I not bottomed out on the eng composite.

Crazy about the MAT142 situation, eh? I was all set to go, and then I randomly saw the new requirement in the fall. I had attended the info meeting last April, and they said nothing about MAT 142, and I had MAT120. So I added 142 to my schedule and finished that up in December and applied as soon as the instructor posted grades. Jeesh. It's like jumpin' through hoops - this entrance into nursing school! Anyway, I finished my last class today to be eligible to apply to the CEP program this month - patiently (ha) waiting for the instructor to post grades so I can go apply and not have to wait til that last week when I know advising will be SO packed. GL to you!!

I did terrible on the grammar it was definitely the hardest for me! So did you pass?(:

I really found the McGraw Hill practice test book to help with grammar. The books has 3 practice tests for each section, I would test myself once and review anything I missed or "guessed" on, and so on. Also the Elseiver HESI review book 3rd edition was very helpful in reviewing and clarifying the why's and how's of grammar. If you struggled I would strongly suggest both books.

I did very well! Thank you for asking. My English Composite score was 96% and my Math 94%. All in all I felt the test was much easier than I expected. I don't feel as if it goes into deep detail and certainly dandy cover everything from the book.

Best of luck in your second attempt!

YAYY!!! congrats (: I actually did pass the first time but only with an 80.67 in english and 86% in math but its still a pass!! when will you be applying to the program?

I turned my application in at Mesa on 1/25. My advisor told me to be prepared to being this fall, which was surprising. Yet, still no news from District on when they will be sending out emails for adding our additional campus choices, etc.

What about you? Have you applied already?
