Meeting with Provost-Advise Needed

Published

Need some advise.  The nursing program I am in requires a 73 test average in addition to a 73 overall average.  This semester in one class I ended up with a 71 test average but a 75 overall average and as a result I failed the class this semester.

I filed an appeal and was denied.  However after taking with some friends, I realized I might have a chance with requesting a meeting with the Provost.

Here is my argument, I went to the profession after every test for remediation.  After my second remediation with my professor, she suggested I go speak with the student services counselor.  I reached out to them but they couldn’t see me before the next test and suggested I reach out to local counselors in the area.  I called them and never received a call back.

So now, I have a meeting with the provost and want to be fully prepared for my argument that I wasn’t provided services that are required for the school to keep its accreditation.

Does anyone have any experience with talking to the Provost?

Never. If I failed, it's normally my fault. It didn't matter whether my teacher was excellent or not. If I didn't have time to study and review, I suck. I'm generally be able to turn my grades around.

However, I don't know what your situation is. How many hours do you study per week?

I study by myself every day at least 2 hours a day.  On the weekends, I studied with my cohort group for 5-6 each day.  The final I studied an additional 4 hours a  day with my grandmother -who is a former school teacher.  I was trying to get all the study techniques covered to help myself.  I made one of the highest grades in the class on the final (71).

I’m more worried about sitting out of classes for 6 months before I get back into classes.  I’m not saying that my grade is incorrect, I’m saying that I was denied services for testing counseling which is one of the major points schools get for accreditation.

Did you attempt to see one of them the day you received your exam's grade?

Yes.   I met with the professor for remediation after the final.

So, you waited until final. I'm not advising you anything. As a student, I still meet with the teacher for each test. If I understand why I failed that quiz or exam, I don't have to. That's too late to seek help.

No I met with the professor after each and every test like I do for every class.  I misunderstood what you were asking.

For this class though because I knew I was struggling after the second test I was advised to go and see student counseling services (who could not see me).

Did you follow-up?  Did you try to come in those days they were opened? With the COVID-19, I often found myself making an appointment ahead of time. Without my calendar, I'd be lost. Are you in an accelerated program?

Did you give them a correct number? If so, are you sure that they didn't call you back?

This is their RECOMMENDATION. It is not an excuse for you not to take the initiative and follow-thru with the RECOMMENDATION. This argument is meritless...you'll need to justify your academic record (which, unfortunately, sounds poor) NOT attempt to "pass the buck" by saying it's someone else's faults. Cause it's not...it's yours.

I'm not a perfect or sharper student in my group. I'm hanging in other classes this time. However, I was doing alright in ATI exams.  Some of my classmates I'm closed to resent me nowadays. They told me that I've never told them about the practice test on ATI and Saunders. My professor showed us these platforms. I told them these, too. Now, they stated that I've never told them. Frankly, I did and helped them throughout our program, too. I'm done. I won't tell our instructors though. I'm tired. I need my personal time. I benefited from knowing people. I didn't get anything from them but making my time suffered. Critical thinking is not learned in one week or one month. I'm not great at it. Good enough. They're blaming our instructors. This is making me not want to be an instructor someday. I start to grow bad feelings against my classmates who aren't acknowledging their part. So, I'll keep my head down and stay away from their drama. I don't want to be dragged in their dark holes.

Were you meeting with the student services counselor to ask for accommodations such as longer test taking time, having someone read the questions out loud to you, a special note taker for class? Did you have accommodations in high school or for your pre-reqs?

I don't know what's your issues. I went through some stressful events. For example, my ex kept calling me that he didn't see life to be fruitful without me. And my landlord didn't take rejection very well. He was my BFF's ex. He got rid of her. I didn't flirt with him. I ignored him. My BFF disowned me. When she left, he tried to get closer to me. He did everything. I was getting annoyed. He'd be in the hallway waiting for me at 300. One evening, I woke up with him in my bedroom. He apologized and said that he was intoxicated--he said he got lost. It was Friday night forced himself into my bedroom appeared to be worried. I was in my birth suit. I opened the door to investigate. He was looking for his kids. He said that they were missing. Of course, I panicked. I put my clothes on and helped him look for his kids. I asked him some questions and was about to call 911, he stopped me because he "remembered," that his ex had them. I let it go and gave him the benefits of the doubt. He was outside of the bathroom when I just came out from the shower around 300ish. There are too many to list that I had ignored.

To cut a long story short, I woke up with two men in my bedroom.  They didn't harm me, but I felt threatened I woke up with two freaking men in my bedroom. It was locked. I called the cops. They couldn't do anything for me but suggest relocation. I wanted it badly. There was no place available, or space I could afford. I had to wait another few weeks. It was painful. I needed my books and the internet. I had nowhere to go. I didn't want to quit. I gambled my life. I refused to sleep at my friend's house. Yes, it was a bad move. I let everyone know in my class subtly in case I was found cold.

My happy story, I turned my grades around and didn't miss school. I live in my apartment. It has a double door. The first door is a metal door with metal frames. The doorknobs are double and are wrapped in metals. He has to be skillful to break in my place. I don't go out at night. That MF can be around. He knows where I attend college. I can't wait to be done. I start to pray to get me by.

I hope that you're in a safe place and peace.
