You can push Dilantin at rate of 25mg/minute. Diluted in NS of course.

Your facility should have a "protocol guide" for administering IV meds, piggy backs, etc. That would be your "bible". Ours sits on top of the pyxis for easy access.

Where I work, we can never give Phenergan IVP anymore. And with good reason. I had it done to me, UNdiluted and it burned all the way to my armpit. Not worth the risk of phlebitis, with its low pH.

not to mention phenergan ruins an iv by the 2nd push...and with patients who are HARD sticks.....id rather give it IM, its much less of a pain in the ...

Was given Compazine IVP in the ER one time. I thought my hand and lower arm would ache right off. The nurse either pushed it too fast or perhaps should have diluted it more with the IVF that were infusing. After that, I empathized a little more with my patients......ANYTHING going INTO a body is an INVASIVE procedure and great care should be taken to FIRST DO NO HARM exclamation.png

I'm sorry to hear that :crying2:

Phenergan and Ativan NEED to be diluted before pushing. Its like sludge to begin with, and it burns! When in doubt, just dilute it!

Hurts like h*ll....if anyway to do a slower drip, the patient and their veins will thank you :)

Yep, last place I did med-surg/ortho, Phenergan was definitely off of the push list (unless in a PCA) due to the nasty possibility of crashing very quickly. Phlebitis is bad, lethal arrythmias makes an even worse day...:)
