wow, who would have thought after 20 years in nursing I would be without a job. I was 18+ years in a nursing Union, and did the one thing I said I would never do...... got lured out of the union into management! worked my behind off on a job I loved. Worked 50 and 60 hrs a week..... (paid for the management 40 hrs) on call 24/7, not able to take a weekend off or vacation in years. Finally it got to be too much. New boss. Harassment. overworked. I bid back on one of the open floor jobs at the hospital.
and..... even though it was the exact job I left in the union.. the job while I held it I earned employee of the month twice.....employee of the year once...and nominated for nurse of distinction. ...never a bad evaluation. had not used a sick day in 3 years...... I was denied this job. And when I asked HR why.... they could not give me a reason! So since I bid on the job and was giving up my management position.... that left me without a job at all!!!!!! The hospital has 3 open Med Surge Positions.... I am qualified for all, and bid on 4 different jobs in the hospital! and nothing. nada. zilch. with no reason from HR.
so after working 20 years at this place, I am now filing for unemployment. How humiliating! I go from working 240 hrs a month, being on call all the time, to nothing. My first day off in 3 weeks was the day they escorted me to my car and told me they would not give me a union staff job. Really? That is what hard work and loyalty give you?
About 5 years ago I worked with a nurse who won the Nurse Excellence Award for the entire hospital system. The very next year she was fired. She had almost reached a certain point where her retirement benefits would have given her a guaranteed income for the rest of her life - she was fired just before her anniversary date. She tried to fight it with HR to no avail. She had been written up on a bogus claim and HR sided with upper management. There is no loyalty in nursing.
How dastardly.

She should have taken it to court, there have been cases where employers were found to be using this type of complaint to avoid pensions, and the people won their pension monies.
OP: smacks of ageism to me. I wouldn't drop it because of the one union rep, go up the ladder! Our contract also allows for people to come back in. Did they fill those positions from outside? Our policies allow for movement within hospital, having priority over outsiders.

I have also been advised by legal counsel that bringing employment actions are a money losing and time consuming effort for nothing. I was told the only way the ex-employee can hope to win is if there is an iron-clad case, which almost everyone does not have.
Have only been out of work four months. Other places will hire me and have recently, Just cannot go back to a previous employer I enjoyed working for so much. I likely should just phone HR and ask them what's up. Maybe I will get the truth:lol2:
Sometimes I wonder if employers are insulted if we have the nerve to quit... something similar has happened to me as well.
When I quit a hospital specialty unit PRN job due to prolonged lack of work/hours I gave plenty of notice, called mgr, had a good talk with her, left on the best terms, never any write-ups, etc. - and recently found out that she made me ineligible for rehire! I was honestly shocked when the nurse recruiter told me that. Although this does not make me ineligible for the entire hospital, she said that it was unlikely that any internal manager would even consider me (I have to agree, I probably wouldn't either if I were a mgr).
Like I said, I just don't understand it. But apparently I have plenty of company nationwide

wow, Kudos to all. This has been real helpful. I was feeling so down, and like it was only me. I got some good tips, and contacted the Equal Employment people. I am going forward with a lawsuit against age discrimination. I was afraid for 20 years to stick up for anyone else at the facility that was treated unfairly. I don't expect the other nurses to stick up for me..... since I know all to well what it is like to be in the hot seat. But from now on, since I am not able to be a patient advocate, maybe I will turn into a nurses advocate.
Everything happens for a reason. This may be the year of Karma.

How very petty of both the person and the institution. Sounds like you are really better off out of there though.

You cannot really be THAT naive. Do you really think an institution would let you back into the ranks after being privy to management secrets?

I'm very sorry to hear that I'm not a nurse yet but I wold never though that nurses like you wold be out of a job. Only advise I can give is maybe since you work so hard for 20yrs maybe this is a sign for you to take it easy; but if you feel that not for you I'm sure any hospial would love to have u, maybe in a higher postions. Just keep your head up.
