Does anyone have a true understanding of the MS vs MSN degree? From what I understand an MS is just an RN with a master's degree meaning you cannot qualify to take the NP exam, but you're a higher-ranked RN. But, is there any way to use it and get an MSN as well (like with a post-masters certificate)? I want to be an NP but I am not ready to get my DNP just yet. What are yall's thoughts/understanding?
So NY state does not offer MSN degrees and from my understanding you cannot get a post masters certificate to become an NP because the NP boards have specific requirements needed in order to be seated for it.
if you want to become an NP you can go to another school in another state (such as CT) and obtain an MSN degree which is usually less in length than a DNP (depends on the program). But usually you’ll need to have work experience as an RN before applying to MSN or even dnp programs!
it’s also an MN (masters of nursing) and MSN (masters of science in nursing) ... not MS (masters of science).
But you’re right in the regards of what the degrees mean!
I just created a facebook group for admitted students: https://www.facebook.com/groups/829469187635469/?ref=share
Feel free to join!

Just now, wp650 said:Agreed. I’m off social media too and the thought of having to start a facebook makes me cringe
If you click on the "Breakroom" link in the menu bar, you can create a Club here on allnurses for your cohort. This thread will always be an option as well.

Congrats to those who are accepted! And good luck to all who are still waiting : )
As an international student, I wanna ask if there are any other international students here?
Hi @icecream8357 fellow international student from Indonesia here! So glad to see another international student :’) where are you from? And is Columbia your first choice?
I am still waiting to hear back from UCLA, but I had to book my spot for MDE program since UCLA won’t announce until February which is past the deadline to submit SIR for columbia

Hey! Aren't there NP programs in NYC, and would be fit for me if I intend to stay and work here? I agree you'd need at least one year of experience first though.
Also, do you know what the specific requirements from the NP boards would be? I also found a post masters certificate program in NYC that requires a "master's degree in Nursing." I'll be sure to contact this program and see if I would qualify with the masters degree Columbia will offer.
I was accepted to the MDE program at Columbia, but I don't plan on attending the DNP program and plan to become an NP with a masters here in NYC. Im stuck on what route I should take basically- should I just obtain a BSN from an accelerated program instead is what I'm thinking.

Most NP programs require you to have a masters where you are specialized in a specific area of nursing. Maybe a few programs will be clear and say "open to registered nurses with clinical master's degrees who wish to become nurse practitioners". Which are basically out of New York. Because Columbia's degree is basically equivalent to a BSN. However, we learn on a masters level, and with this degree you can take on leadership positions. Sometimes the wording is weird or hard to understand.

Hey! I’m someone who hasn’t heard back yet, a group helps get the ball rolling, if anything it will help those who will be accepted in the next round with resources and to connect with others. We’re in quite a unique situation where there’s more than one round of acceptances now and the accepted students shouldn’t have it wait if they didn’t want to. In the end, those accepted will all start together and it’s all that ultimately matters.
good luck to those of us who still haven’t heard yet! ❤️ And immense congratulations to those accepted!!
