MDC Nursing spring 2014

Published

So I'm starting the post for Spring 2014. I'm currently waiting for my acceptance letter for fall term but just in case applying for spring is my back up plan.

So my GPA is 3.0 and my teas is 72 giving me a score around 73.

Since I didn't get a first round email for fall I'm thinking of retaking my teas test so if anyone is willing to study with me please let me know. Good luck to everyone applying for spring!!

I'm so glad to see there's a thread for AO Spring 2014 hopefuls! Does anyone know specifics about the class schedules? I'm single with a 3 y/o son and foresee a lot of shuffling around :wacky:. Worth it in the end, right? I turned in my application a few weeks ago-- I only applied to the MDC AO, so I'm REALLY hoping my 94 TEAS and 3.86 GPA will do the trick, 'cause all my eggs are in one basket at this point! I guess we'll see...

Good luck to everyone!!!

Is there anyone applying to the AO program that lives in Broward County?? If yes, how do you plan to transit to and from school? By the way, I live in broward.

Hi! I applied to the AO a few weeks ago. I live in North Miami Beach but will be moving to Broward in the spring. Do you know what time we need to be on campus? I was hoping to take the tri-rail/metro down when possible, but the earliest trains through Hollywood aren't until after 7am. Gotta get my son to preschool before that too. Yikes, so much to plan for... not to mention getting in!

@jquade wow, your scores are impressive! I'm pretty sure you will be getting in. I've looked at other threads regarding the AO program and apparently there are a few schedules to choose from. Good luck!!

I take mine tomorrow morning. Ive been studying from the ATI manual, McGraw-Hills practice test, ATI online practice assessment and I have been practicing 200 questions daily on tests.com. Fingers crossed, lots of prayer, and just hoping for the best.

hope it went well!

MDC received my transcripts last monday, but I don't see my student records showing any updates. Has anyone else had this issue? I'm thinking I need to call admissions tomorrow; the deadline is so close!

If transportation is an issue have you considered Broward College? Food for the thought.

@jquade: We are in a similar situation, I also have a toddler and transportation cost gonna be a killer.. PLEASE do not consider Broward College, that's a suicide mission. Here is a snapshot of the AO schedule a previous MDC student wrote:

You spend the first 4-6 weeks in skills lab, learning everything you need to know to go to clinicals. You will also have to pass one "return demo" for skills before your first clinical. The return demo test is: everyone gets tested on vitals and one random skill you pick out of a hat (O2 admin, enemas, etc.). You have a couple of shots to pass this test, which you have to do to move on and to go to clinicals.

The first 6 weeks from a lecture standpoint is: Fundamentals, Pharmacology Math, and Physical Assessment. You will be in class if I remember correctly, everyday in some form or fashion the first 6 weeks, between lecture and skills. Somewhere in there you start clinicals at the Nursing home and hospital, two days a week 8 hour shifts.

2nd 1/2 of first semester:

You will be in class for lecture Mon. and Fri. for lectures on Med Surg and Pharmacology. There will also be skills lab in there somewhere for medications. You will also have a return demo for medication administration at the end of the semester. Clinicals are two days a week, each shift is 8 hours.

The last four weeks of the semester, you will only have Med Surg lecture 2x/wk and clinicals 2.x per week.

2nd semester:

You will take one month each of OB, Peds, and Psych. Each has 2 lectures per week. OB and Peds have (1) 12-hr shift of clinicals per week, and Psych has (2) 12-hr shifts per week.

3rd semester:

Advanced Med Surg is 6 weeks. 2x/week lecture Mon & Fri (8-12) and (2) 12-hr shifts of clinicals. (Right now I have weekend clinicals at Ryder/Jackson, so I'm in lecture until 12p on Mon & Fri, and then in clinicals all weekend 7a-7p).

Leadership which I believe is the same schedule as Adv Med Surg, but is only 4 weeks long.

Most clinicals are during the week either in the day or evening and Med Surg has a lot of weekend clinicals. Your times for the clinicals above are correct.

Sorry I couldn't just give you a list, but the classes are all over the place. I think Generic follows the same order, the classes are just overall, a bit longer

Heres another students snapshot:

The AO schedule so far has been mostly M-F. Let me explain, the Skills labs are scheduled for a less number of weeks then the lecture so once you finish and pass the test you will get a couple of Thursdays off. My schedule for the January (when I started) to end of March was as follows:

Mon 8-11 fundamentals 1-3:30 pharmocology

Tues Wed Thurs Skills lab 8-12 (Jan to beginning of Feb)

Tues Wed 7 - 3 (for clinics starting mid Feb)

Friday Fundamentals 8-11 Health Assessment 12-5

In addition to the classes, there is a ATI program that we are tested on also. This is a self- guided tutorial we are responsible for. It counts as 5% of our fundamentals class.

I do not if you guys are aware of the 7 point grading scale in the program. It's not the 10 point scale we were accustomed to! Get ready for it

@jquade: Hope to see you in January. By the way, I got in for AO Fall 2013 (I declined my seat due to financial reasons). My scores were not as impressive as yours, so I'm sure you will be fine.

@ jla27

it did not go as well as I hoped but I will be turning in my application today and I will see what options that may give me as far as retesting. 58.7 ;-( BTW if I was you I would personally visit the dept that enters transcripts in the system. I had this very same issue towards graduation time when I was getting my AA. They have so many transcripts and not enough staff or time to enter them in the system.

Turned in my application today...this moment was too good to be true. So now its time to wait until mid-November for acceptance/rejection letters to be sent out.

Anyone applying for the online bridge program?
