MDC Fall 2011 =)

Published

Hi guys! Who else is applying for MDC Fall 2011?

I am also applying for FIU-- I was accepted last year to MDC but for financial and personal reasons could not attend. :'( Who else will be applying to Generic FT? Please state what program you will be applying to!

I will be taking the TEAS sometime in March, in which I will also be taking the HESI A2 for FIU. So I might as well be studying for both, lol. Anybody taken the TEAS at MDC? Share your experiences here! :) I will be using a general book for nursing school entrance exams... it's by Barron... and I will be studying my math from a nursing calculation book, and my sciences from my anatomy, biology, and other notes. Is it true there is geology on the exam? How irrelevant... lol

Well good luck to us all! :heartbeat

Sophie- Your grades look pretty good, but the passing score for the TEAS is in the upper 50's. Unfortunately for those who are not great standardized test takers, that significantly decreases your chances of being accepted into the nursing program at MDC. Say you received a 65 on the TEAS, your application score would be a 73. No one knows what the cut off application score will be, but I'm thinking that it will be in the upper 70's or low to mid 80's.

You were already accepted to a great program though, and will be earning a BSN rather than an ASN. I say look for more scholarships and loans for Nova. If I could have afforded it, I would have tried to apply to more programs (all maxed out on loans already!). As for work- look around if you need fewer hours! I actually quit my fully time salary position already so that I could prepare for nursing school and now have a much more flexible part time job. The money's not as good, but that's why it's a temporary job to get me through school :)

Good luck to all of us!

Sophie,

i, too, say ... isn't there any more scholarships, grants, etc that can be received for NSU (Nova). Getting a BSN in 3 years vs an ADN in 2 years would be wonderful. I'd sure put a lot of effort into trying to find scholarships. I'd totally understand about not wanting loans.

Still you must feel great that you were accepted into NSU.

I find it interesting that so many people have such high expectations about MDC's "cut off" (who gets in, who doesn't). I had heard that 70-75 for a TEAS score was not unheard of to be accepted into MDC. I had heard that below 70, you might have a long shot.

Totally agree with others here... any temporary failure is just a learning experience to move ahead. Take the TEAS again. Be more prepared this time.

Strongly suggest you go to http://www.atitesting.com and pay the $100 for the book and more importantly the online simulation TEAS exam. You get to take simulation exam A two times and simulation exam B two times. It sure helped me do very well on my TEAS exam. And I only had 10 days to study so I was definitely a Nervous Nellie about the whole process.

I was a bit disappointed my 4 year BA Degree GPA of 3.2 makes me a non-candidate for upper level universities. I'd have loved to do my BSN in 2 years. Yes, there is an Accelerated BSN that I'm eligible for... but I never did

19 hours a semester when I was younger... definitely not do-able now.

Sincerely,

RNfem

I'm applying to as much scholarships as I can. Now it's just the process of whether I'm going to get them.

You konw what said is so truth, MDC sometimes flip the script. A friend of mines got accepted for Spring, and her TEAS score was below average, GPA was 3.2 or 3.3. I couldn't believe it, she got in.

But i think im going to stick with Nova and hope for the best. Good luck with MDC.

RNfem-

I'm not able to send private messages yet :( I have no idea as to whether or not we are required to have a current CPR certification, or which kind we will need before graduation. I think that if it were a requirement, that they would have included it on the application... right?

Salutations,

No, the CPR card isn't required to apply to RN school.

But I do believe it is required before you start RN school.

My belief is based on reading various postings and discussions with

people of similar interests.

I strongly suspect at time of acceptance to RN school,

there will be a list of requirements to do

a) shots

b) criminal background check

c) CPR certification

d) etc, etc, etc.

Today, learned that there are various CPR certification cards

And the one that we RN students want is the

BLS: healthcare provider where BLS=basic life support.

Sincerely,

RNfem

From previous posts, I have some of the forms we will need. Of course the background check is required, as well as a physical, and immunization or proof of immunization. I currently have CPR for professional rescuer, but I'm not sure if that is going to be the same one that we need for the program. Also, I am aware of some programs that integrate CPR into one of the classes in the first semester (intro to nursing or fundamentals of nursing both sound like they could include a CPR component). I guess we'll just have to wait and see what they require when we *hopefully* receive our acceptance packets :o

hey you could always call the nursing dept ahead of time... i think they are willing to help :)

Sophie, I also heard great things about Nova. I was taking a few classes at Keiser and some experienced health techs there were all planning on transferring to Nova. Not sure why, but they all said it was the best. As far as the TEAS, I don't understand why they weigh it so heavily. It seems like so much of it was on English grammar trivia. It doesn't make sense to me because someone might have a Masters in English Literature and ace that part of the test while someone else who is bilingual might not do as well. Yet the bilingual (or trilingual) person would most likely be a much more valuable employee. Plus some people just don't do that well on standardized tests, but would make excellent health care workers because of their motivation and passion.

I thought Keiser was considered a technical school (like Sanford Brown, etc.) and didn't think the credits transferred. ...learn something new every day! :)

Keiser is a private overly priced for-profit institution. I got this quote from their site

Transfer of Credits from Keiser University

Students who are interested in continuing their education at an institution other than Keiser University should first make inquiry at the institution they plan to attend to determine credits and requirements needed for entrance to that institution. Transferability of credits is at the discretion of a receiving institution. Keiser University cannot assure transfer of credit; however, Keiser University has entered into articulation agreements with some local colleges and universities. Students should contact the Dean of Academic Affairs for specific information.

I would HIGHLY suggest asking what will transfer because I know some people that went to Keiser and their credits didn't transfer!! (yikes)

Woohoo my boyfriend finally found a job! =) now I just need to get accepted to nursing school...is it June yet? Hows everyones summer classes going?

So I was reading older posts from 2009 and 2010 and the applicants then received their letters around June 10! That's right around the corner guys! MDC had also told them at the time that they would receive the letters around the end of June like they've told us..now I'm more anxious!! What do you guys think??
