MCCCD Nursing - Campus Choices

Published

Hey all!

I am wondering which Maricopa campuses you've chosen to including in your application and why? I've heard how wonderful the Mesa program is. What are your 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th choices and why?

I went with Mesa, despite living across the street from Chandler Gilbert (which I've heard a lot of bad things about) because Mesa consistently has one of the highest NCLEX pass rates. I am in Block 3 at Mesa and love it. :)

I went to SCC and LOVED the program. I have heard good things about both Mesa and Phoenix as well.

SCC is consistently over 95% NCLEX pass rate but I feel they are a little more difficult to graduate from then some of the other schools. Of the 90 I started with, only 27 of us graduated on time of a total graduating class of about 45. The remaining people either transferred in or repeated a block somewhere along the line.

I'm at GateWay and I LOVE it. The campus is nice (not in the best area though), they have newer equipment, the teachers truly care and want you to succeed, and they have the highest NCLEX pass rate out of the CC's. It's pretty centrally located, as it is right next to the airport. Overall, I'm really happy there!

mrsboots87, you may not know, but I'm curious if you knew why such a high number didn't graduate in a timely manner? Study habits? Outside obligations? Laziness? I just started block 1 at SCC so I'm curious to your opinion! Thanks :)

I'm not too sure. When I entered block 2, we had lost half the class from block 1. About half of the class was replaced with people repeating block 2. I don't think every cohort loses so many people, but a lot seems to be the norm.

I mostly just think it has to do the low entrance standards for the wait list. A 2.0 and an 85% on only English and Math on the HESI is actually pretty easy to attain. So I'm sure most who failed, just weren't equipped to pass from the get go. But some who failed were 4.0 students before school, so I'm not sure what happened with them.

Some people didn't study well or at all, some people just couldn't get a hang of the NCLEX style questions. Some had outside obligations or bad timing with life events.

And this is just heresay so take it with a grain of salt, but the tests at SCC are supposedly harder then those at other schools. I don't know how true that is because I went only to SCC and didn't find the tests terrible.

If you study the powerpoints, take good notes, and supplement with the books, all the info is given to be able to pass. I felt the instructors were helpful and would make time to help the students who asked, there was lots of lab time given to practice skills. Overall I can't really pinpoint any one thing that contributed to such a low attrition rate.

Ok that makes me feel much better! I've been doing everything you said, including studying nclex prep books and getting pharmflash etc, and feel I have a good grip on the material just those numbers were a bit shocking haha so thank you!

Im wondering the same thing! Im going to apply in May and my first choice will be mesa but everyone keeps asking....waht about your second choice? 3rd? 4th? I have no idea.. would love to hear some more insight (:

I would say that Mesa and Scottsdale are my top choices. Mesa is close to home, familiar with the campus and know its a great program. Scottsdale because the location works for my job, gym, good location etc. I hadn't looked up the NCLEX pass rate for SCC yet, I am happy to see it so high. Maybe Gateway will become an option as well, also a good location for me. I actually don't think that Gateway is a "bad area", my old gym is really close to Gateway. It is mostly industrial in that area but isn't dangerous or whatever we tend to associate "bad" with.

As of right now: 1 Mesa, 2 Scottsdale, 3 Gateway..... I don't know if I would even chose other campuses due to location. I couldn't see myself driving to the West Valley for classes....that seems like it would make life harder. I haven't heard anything at all about Gilbert-Chandler other than that their Nursing programs is newer. Anyone have insight to GCCC?

Hey guys, this is way off topic but I am studying to take the HESI A2 at CGCC and was wondering which subjects or topics are on the HESI so I know what to study. I read on the website that math, reading comprehension, vocabulary & general knowledge, grammar, learning style and critical thinking are what is on the HESI A2. It says that biology, chemistry, physics and anatomy & physiology are not administered. Is this true? Thanks for your help!

Someone already answered, but I just wanted to add that you do not even have to do the learning style/critical thinking areas. They aren't scored, and they don't add or take away from the exam in any way. You can do it for personal use if you want to though. I fully planned on doing it when I did my HESI - I got to it, clicked on one area (no recollection of which) did two questions and said umm, no way. I'm DONE. And closed it and left! I was just done sitting there.

Plus, and yes, I'm being a tad snarky, but mostly in a silly funny way - there was a girl sitting across from me (please God don't let her be on here reading this) that was practically reading her exam questions out loud. I am pretty sure she was taking the HESI also. I get that sometimes when you say things out loud that it helps you hear it - I am very aural and visual, so really, I understand. However, I also understand that THISISATESTROOMBEQUIET. Anyway, suffice it to say, I had had enough of her shenanigans, and had to get out of there. My test was a little comical. I hated the way the calculator was responding to me. I noticed at some point that it was not entering numbers, and sometimes double and triple entering, and then I was worried I had done previous calculations wrong (although with the multiple choice the way it was it was not likely). My mouse was super annoying and unresponsive - so I ended up placing it atop the desk instead of using it in the keyboard drawer thingamajig. I peed before I went in, but then halfway through the exam, coffee hit me, and I think I had to nervous-pee. Good lord, then the girl across from me with her out-loudish reading (the ENTIRE time)?? I was thinking the odds were stacked against me that day!

Okay - talk about way off topic. lol.
