Okay it is a long time until the letters go out and we are all wondering if our HESI score was good enough. So let's be silly and play detectives and see if we can get an idea of where we stand.
For 1000 students with around 30 seats per room, there was around 34 classes.
1. Greent52389- 1/7/09, Rm 130, 81.73 average
2. Shannonmarie7- 1/7/09, Rm 115, 81.75 average

4.
5.
6.
7.
8.
9.
10.
Repy with your test date, number of the room you were in, and the average score from your class and I will update this page to see what some of the overall class averages are.
But they won't just use those classes to figure it, because A&P 1 & 2 were one of the first classes, I took there, I have had a whole slew of classes in between that transferred as electives. If they use any transferred class and they obviously take electives (last 12 credits of underwater marble stacking)... then they will use all those classes that transferred regardless of what they are. We wouldn't be held to higher standards in regards to them not looking at our classes that transferred as electives. (Not sure if I am making sense.) I've taken at least 8 classes between A&P 2 and now, and they did indeed take the classes (even if it wasn't equally).
I can really see how the new system will bring equality to their selection process.
I wasn't saying MCC is better than Baker. Either route leads to RN (success). I was making the point that those who do get into MCC's program ARE prepared as the numbers(low dropout rate/NCLEX success) show.
I'll just say one last thing and then leave it alone. You all obviously really want to get into a nursing program because you spend your free time on a message board. Instead of complaining about people taking fluff classes to get in, take them yourself and get in yourself. I can guarentee you no one in the program feels guilty about taking PE to get into the program. I've never heard it mentioned except on this board. When I decided to go into the nursing program a couple years ago, I found out right away about using PE classes to get in and guess what I signed up for? PE classes. I took a cake CPR class and a focus on fitness class where we worked out on Saturday mornings and got an "A". I've never felt bad or guilty about that and I did just fine in the program. MCC sets up their admission policy and I followed it. Not only that but a 2 credit PE class (focus on fitness is one of them) is REQUIRED to complete the program. So why not take that class when you are trying to get in???
Come to the realization that you don't make the rules or decide what is fair. All you can do is follow the rules set forth by the powers to be. If you don't do everything in your power within the rules than you have no one to blame for not getting in but yourself.

Nice.
I understand your point. I do. I am signed up for both nutrition and PE this term, but that won't do any good this time around (or for next year, for that matter), which is why we are posting trying to figure out the current inane system and how it affects those of us who applied for 2009 and have Baker classes. By the time we can implement your advice, that system won't be in place anymore, so your advice is totally useless from that stand point. Apparently, MCC is concerned about getting students in whose grades are merit based and not just a way of working the system. (Which I have no problem with as long as it is within the guidelines set up by the school which it is this time around...although, I still think that I can gripe about it...it DOES suck for those of us that came into this late in the game.)
I'm posting to this thread in an attempt to help deal with and get a heads up on how this will play out this April. Perhaps you are posting because you are offended that some of us feel that taking easy classes for the requirement is kind of crappy. We aren't passing judgment on you personally. Just the system, which they are changing anyway, so it is a moot point. I am totally down with the work smart, not harder, way of thinking. I am glad it worked out for you. But that just won't work for us now.
If you could shed some light on how our classes at Baker will be affected by the criteria at MCC this application period, that would be helpful...
No student from Baker would be able to take a semester off and take easy classes. Basically you have 13 classes to complete in 3 semesters unless you want to drag out the classes longer than a year. I in fact had 15 classes because I wanted to get more experience in math and went back so I could do better on the entrance tests. The only way anyone from Baker could do that is if they have already applied to Baker once and are waiting for the next application period. Even then we have already paid for 13 classes, so who wants to add more debt taking classes like art that don't matter for anything in the big picture of the program.
Using easy classes may have worked for you, but obviously it does not work for everyone because MCC does have people that drop because that is why they have alternates. Students at MCC have plenty of time to take off a semester and do the easy class thing since you have less pre-reqs classes if you get in, and 2 of them are not even required to be done until when you are in the program. At Baker you have to complete all classes and NET before you can apply, it's not hey I will get it done later.
MCC entrance must be flawed because they are changing it to be similar to Bakers and that says something.
*********************************************************
Are there any former Baker students on this board that went all the way through the pre-reqs and ended up in MCC? I would love to hear how the entrance process went for you.
Some how I have a feeling there are very few, because through all the posts I have read on here I have yet to see a post done by a Baker student that went all the way and ended up at MCC. Interesting.....
and because i am computer savvy....
quote: john20 from another post........
"i had a bachelors of science and experience in the medical field. a lot of my community college (mcc) classmates had bachelors degrees as well. your degrees don't impress the schools. i had a 2.9 gpa from a university ranked in the top 75 by us news and world report. i had to go back and get a 4.0 over 12 credit hours in order to get in. mcc just looks at your last 12 credit hours.
so.... this just proves my point. you have a bachelors degree in science which required you to take the sciences that we did at baker. you barely even squeaked by to have those classes count at mcc. i'm sorry no one can tell me that my hard earned a- gpa does not make me more deserving as someone that barely made the pre-req classes. i understand that you went to a university and they are harder okay fine, but you were working towards a bsn right and had to settle for a bachelors of science because your gpa is not high enough to get in so you came to mcc, did fluff classes and are now in the program. i really doubt that you just felt the need to get a bachelors degree in science just to have it.
my whole point is that there are people that take fluff classes and are not able to cut it in the program and that takes spots from people that could. like i said the fact that mcc is changing their criteria shows that they know there is a problem.
Ah, now it becomes clear as to why you're so cranky, John20! You're not "defending" MCC, you're defending yourself. No regret on taking B.S. classes, but enough regret to get all defensive on a message board about it, eh?
Officially done though, I'm not going to bicker. I'm glad you made it into the program, John20, and I don't mean that sarcastically either. I am truly very happy for you :) You did what you could to get in, and you did it!

On a completely unrelated note, I am now starting to stalk the mail man. I know I have a while to go, but I the Mail Man Stalking bug has bit me. Gemberly, you gave it to me, I know it!! I DID get something in the mail from MCC, but it was something to do with financial aid and not nursing. I about died!
lol.
Did you recieve the letter that your application is complete/incomplete? I haven't recieved anything yet, I did stop in and they said everything was in, but I would love to get a letter confirming it. I'm guessing the fact that I took the HESI at the beginning of the month might be delaying it. Not sure why I care so much since my "low" GPA is not good enough to get me in anyways.

I have a Bachelors of Science in Biomechanics. I had no plans to become an RN until my mid-late 30s. The science classes at University level are far more demanding than community college level. Unless Baker is on par with Indiana University. That's not a rip, just reality. Good luck to you all.
That stinks when you get something in the mail and it has nothing to do with the program. I feel like I am holding my breath until I get a danged letter.
Regardless of what the letter says, I can't make plans on what I am going to do with most of my time until I get it. I mean, all my free time (minus my 11 credit hours, 4 kids and job...) is spent worrying about it.

That's great and all, but the fact still is that with your GPA there is no way that you would have made it into a program that looks at all your classes, that is why you took the PE and CPR. Indiana University only requires a 2.0 to graduate from that program, and I am guessing that you do not have to compete against 1000+ people to get in, just declare a major right? Also, as you said you were laid off from your job, there is no need for a lot of the "fancy" University degrees with the economy being bad. I know a girl that went to Wayne State University to become a Chemical Engineer, she lasted in that career until the economy tanked and she had to become a bank teller to pay the bills when her company moved out of state.
So at this point I do think that Community College is just as good as a University because at least I can walk out of the nursing program and have a chance at a job. Next year there are going to be a lot of disappointed people that have low GPA's at MCC.

I'm hoping they will only use my last 4 classes, if they go back to AP 1 I am screwed. I still think that their electives should rate lower also.
