Mayo Clinic Arizona Nurse Residency 2020

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

Hello! I am currently in my last semester of nursing school and will be applying to Mayo Clinic. This would be such an amazing opportunity and it would be an honor to be accepted into the summer 2020 cohort.

I've heard that this program is very competitive and difficult to get into without any previous healthcare experience (e.g. Mayo Clinic inter, CNA experience, etc.). I'm worried because I don't have experience other than my clinical rotations. I was wondering if any of you had any insight into if Mayo will hire people without experience / any other advice about increasing my chances of getting hired? Thank you!

Welcome! I will be graduating in May from the concurrent enrollment program with Glendale Community College and Northern Arizona University!

Not yet! I’m dying though! Maybe they will start next week!

Yeah hopefully next week!

I'm graduating from Arizona Western College and I am also doing the NAU CEP! How cool!

Hi! Has anyone heard any updates?

Nothing! The wait is killing me

Same! I keep checking the status of my application too but nothing has changed ? Hopefully we hear something this week!

Ughhhh I’m definitely dying. It’s beginning to affect my sleep LOL. I’m so nervous I’m going to miss their call so I keep waking up to check my phone! I think we should definitely hear something this week. I saw on a really old mayo forum that one cohort wasn’t contacted until Friday- 2 weeks from application date. But that was the latest I saw.

How has everyone been doing during this crazy time? Has finishing up nursing school been going OK?

For me it has definitely been less work than it would have been because we were supposed to do at least 12 hours of precepting a week and so far we've had nothing to replace that. Just recorded lectures to listen to and lots of homework assignments. Also did anyone else hear about how they shortened the NCLEX to minimum 60 questions and max 120 questions and it's supposed to be harder to pass??

Literally has been a nightmare for us. Everything halted for like a week or two while our teachers decided what we were gonna do. So I might end up being a week late graduating. But yeah everything has turned into online work and virtual simulations to help make up for preceptorships and lost clinicals. But yeah I have heard that NCLEX is going to be shorter. Maybe not necessarily harder though.

I just got an unknown caller call like 5 minutes ago and I thought it was mayo but it was banner LOL! By the way, anyone in az, if any nursing student is looking for a temporary position at a hospital, banner is hiring students to help with the covid crisis. You just man the desks, transport patients, answer call lights and just basic help. It’s $15 an hour for day and $17.70 at night. And they are super flexible for whatever days you want to do.

I am expecting that this pandemic is going to cause a delay in their interview process compared to previous cohorts but I don't know how much longer I can handle the anticipation! My program is completely online as well so lots of busy work. I was offered another job but I am really holding out on this residency to work!

I'm curious, what did you guys all put into your application besides the transcript(s) and CV? Cover letter, LORs, etc?

I put a cover letter and I had a letter of recommendation my old boss had written for me for a different job so I added that too ?

Cover letter talking about my CC experience and why I wanted ICU, 2 LOR, and a letter that explained the nursing Scholarship I had received!

I put stuff about honor societities I was in or different organizations. And I had about 9 letter of recs cuz I didn’t have any letters from any old bosses cuz I haven’t worked in quite awhile, so I felt like I had to makeup in other areas. Other than transcripts, cover letter, resume... I didn’t have anything else ?

Yeah you’re probably right. They are probably more worried about what’s going on in the hospital rather than figuring out new grads. So it could be another week or so if they are really taking their time.. I sure hope not cuz being at home makes the new grad program all I think about.
