May give up my dream of being a nurse

I may have to give up my dream of being a nurse. I recently got put on the waitlist for my nursing program, and the way things are, I just don't see anyone giving up a spot so that I can fill their seat.

I looked into other colleges and it gets even more challenging. While the pre requisites are similar, each college has an additional pre req that is different from the last school--classes that are required for their program that you can only take at their school or classes that are not even offered at the college I am currently attending. There is no universal pre requisites for a nursing program, all of them are slightly different which means even if I wanted to apply for more than one program it would be hard to do. It would be easy to apply to two or three different schools if all the pre reqs are the same but colleges are making it hard by adding these additonal & unnecessary classes that I have never even heard of so you can get into their program. And not only that but you only have 5 yrs for a lot of schools before your pre reqs expire, which means I need to hurry up so I wont have to retake classes over again

I have been crying all day long, sad, upset, frustrated. Maybe I need to pick another field because this is just becoming too competitive.

I think a lot of us here have felt this frustration. I really wish applying to nursing school was more like the application process for med school: one application and all prereqs are the same. Unfortunately, each ns has a different requirement and it's truly frustrating. But there are so many different ways to become a nurse and you need to let those feeling of helplessness go and take a few more classes, find a few more school, and apply! Keep us updated! Someone out there must know of some school that you could go to. Tell us your stats-area you live, classes taken, what year they were taken, age (for financial aid purposes), etc.

I am in Toledo Ohio

Yes, what gpa do you need to get into Kent? And how hard is Organic Chem?

You need a 2.7 to be considered into one of Kent's ADN nursing programs. Not all of the Kent branches offer the ADN program though. As far as Organic Chem goes, I am not sure how hard it is because I am currently taking Fundamentals of Chem. You have to remember it's Introduction to Organic Chem. So it's a bit easier than the standard Organic Chem.

Would you consider transferring to a 4-year school and getting a BSN?

I took BioChem. Could that count?

Yes.

Yes.

It just may transfer, you never know! Honestly, I would look into the BSN route. Kent State University is about 2 hours from where you live and you can live on campus as well. You do need a 3.6 GPA for the BSN program.

I don't think you should lose hope about getting in this fall. I was wait-listed last year and was devastated. I live out of state from the college I was attending, so I knew I was coming into play after all the instate students were considered. However, my scores were so high that I thought I wouldn't have a problem. I was floored when I got the "I'm sorry to inform you" letter. BUT....2 weeks later, I got the letter congratulating my acceptance. Then, get this, after orientation and right in the middle of getting the CPR certifications and immunizations/drug screens, I had a major health scare and had to withdraw from the program. So, a 3rd student got the chance to enter. Things do happen and people can't enter or simply change their mind. If other options are out there, then it wouldn't hurt to expand your chances, but I believe you'll have a decent chance getting in to where you've already applied. Best of luck.

Specializes in Cardiology, LTC, SANE.

I am a senior nursing student at Ursuline College in Cleveland Ohio. It is a great school and requires a 2.5 to get into the BSN program. As long as you have taken the right classes and meet their requirements, you are admitted.

Ok here is my advice, I see that you have applied to Mercy College my question for you is did you apply to the day or evening program. If you applied to day and where waitlisted did you see if they have any evening seats open. Im currently in the evening program in the Nur 112 class. I know that the evening program is less popular and they usually do not fill up as quick. I have a girl in my class who was called 1 week before fall class started and was able to get all her paperwork together and start. If they have no seats for the night program either I would call Lourdes and talk to them since they have housing. If you need any more advice you can pm me and I will help you. I would not give up many people do give up seats and there is another school in town with housing and its also a good program. I hope this helps and please let me know if there is anything else I can do.

I applied to the Days program. I talked to someone at Mercy and they told me that all three programs BSN, Days and Evenings are waitlisted. There are more applicants this year.

I knew I should have applied for evenings, though. I remember someone telling me that they dont fill up as quickly, I should have listened. Even though the school is telling me it wouldn't have mattered I dont believe it

Well I would just wait and see if a spot opens up and I think that you have a good chance of getting a seat believe me people do give up there seats since most people apply to more than one school. I did get your private message however I cant reply to them since I dont have enough posts. I will try to answer those questions if you get a seat know that the program is really as hard as everyone says. An 80 percent is a C and anthing lower than in 80 is a class failure. You will be busy with checkoffs, test, and quizes its overwhelming for sure. If you have not taken the drugs and solutions math class take it, i dont know if they will let you until you are in the program but take it with 110 if possible. I think that you should get familar with how to answer NCLEX type questions since this is what the test questions are like. I wish I could give you more advice but really thats it. For some people the program is more difficult than others however it is not easy for anyone. I wish you the best of luck and hope you get a seat. Keep your hope up and like I said before Lourdes program has a great reputation as well and if I didnt get in Mercy that is where I would have went.

do you think the drugs and solutions class will be overwhelming if I wait until I am in the nursing program? I'm going to see if I can take it now because I heard that you really don't have to

and what about medical terminology would taking that class be helpful?
