Maryland BSN hopefuls for Fall 2012

Anyone else preparing for fall 2012? I'm such a dork about this. I've been planning every single little step of this. :lol2: I'll be submitting my university application in October/November. I'm not worried about getting accepted to the University in general because I have a 3.8 right now, provided A&P2 and micro together don't kill me. Then I'll be sitting for the A2 by January (want to finish A&P2 first) and applying to the BSN program by January/February. Unfortunately the CC I'm in doesn't offer one of the pre-reqs for the university, but I can take that over next summer.

Anyone else with similar plans?

You might want to worry a lil' bit, GPA alone doesn't get you into Maryland. You really got to bring it all: GPA, LOR, TEAS, volunteer work, and a well edited personal statement. My application GPA was well over a 3.8 and I feel that my GPA helped me make the first cut, but it was my overall package that got me into school, and seeing how amazing my classmates are, I am certain that Marylands goal is to fill their cohorts with students that are not just smart, but motivated and uniquely amazing.

Just my sappy 2 cents. Good luck in the admissions process, it is one heck of a wait.

I'm applying to AACC for Spring 2011, but if I don't get in then I will pursue acceptance with UMSON. I don't know which one I actually would rather happen. I would love to start now, but I would also love to get my bachelors and not have it broken up into associates then bachelors.... What to do, what to do?

how is the admissions at AACC different than that of UMB?

If you would be a program for about the same amount of time, a lower amount of money put out over time, and could graduate with a Bachelor's why not?

AACC's program is now first-come, first-serve. So as long as you meet their prereq, GPA, and TEAS requirements, your name gets put on the list. When a spot opens up, it's yours. This is a new admissions process and I feel their program will lose a lot of its "prestige" because of this.

UMB is much more competitive and selective. You need letters of recommendation, a CV/resume, and a personal statement. In addition, they look at the "whole package". They have minimum standards, but look for people that are above and beyond.

And I agree with student4life, a stellar GPA is a great way to get your foot in the door, but don't count on that making you a shoe-in. Also, you don't need to be admitted to University of Maryland to get in to UMSON. Unless you're going to knock out the prereqs that your current school doesn't offer while you're enrolled at U of Maryland, save that application fee for a shiny new stethoscope.

Best of luck!

I was just going over the pre-reqs again yesterday to start the application process and... I won't have 2 'science' pre-reqs done by January due to my old chem not counting. I was planning on doing AP2/Chem in the spring and then AP1 during summer but based on the pre-req requirements, I won't qualify so I'm pushing it out to Spring 2013, if I do apply. I am applying to Johns Hopkins Fall 2012 and although I have dreams of a short commute to Shady Grove, if I get into JHU, I'll most likely go there.

JHU is ungodly expensive, add the commute to and from, as well as to the clinical sites + parking for both and tuition is just the tip of the iceberg. Wait it out and apply to UMB @ SG.

Yeh, one glance at their tuition and I immediately made my decision. Even if I had an ice cube's chance in hell of getting in to the program, I wouldn't be able to afford it.

I'm aware of the JHU expense and although I'll apply for their scholarship, the chances of me getting in and getting their half price tuition scholarship are slim. I've been saving up for nursing school since I decided to go. I'm in a unique position as I work in a well paid career right now (which I hate but that's another story). By the time August rolls around, I'll have enough money in my savings account to pay the tuition for JHU (unless they decide to raise it significantly).

UMD is a crazy bargain but again, I could wait to apply and still not get in. UMD gets a lot of applicants and I think I'm competitive but who knows. No guarantees I'll get into JHU either but I'd end up becoming a nurse a whole year earlier if I get into JHU in the fall than if I wait out for UMD for the following spring. And even though I'd love to go to UMD, if I get to started in my new career a whole year earlier, it'd be worth the price difference.

Now if I don't get into JHU, then I'll reapply and apply to UMD and possibly another school. And I'll retake my chemistry as well which I don't plan to do as it'd be the last pre-req I'd need if I went to UMD and JHU doesn't require it.

Finally, completed all the requirements for my application..now it's time to play the waiting game..has anyone else heard of anyone doing the nursing program parttime/ working?? Does anyone else plan on continuing to work while doing the program?

I've just seen there are responses here! Oops! I mis-worded my OP I think. I live in Maryland, but I'm not applying to UMD. I am happy to say I aced my classes last semester, and scored 93% on my A2 (class average was an 82%). I submitted my app a couple of weeks ago and am now waiting. Decisions should be in by March 9th. I'm pretty sure this wait is going to kill me. Still feeling optimistic!
