What is your take on the issue of legalizing marijuana?
Marie_LPN,
You missed my point entirely. Just because there is a law against something doesn't mean it's just. That's why all laws are open to review and reinterpretation (IE: sodomy laws, pot laws). What a great country we have, eh!
Zashagalka, the laws vary from one state to another (THANKFULLY) see --> http://www.norml.org/index.cfm?Group_ID=4516
I have a few buddies that are beat cops and they hate wasting their time dealing with people in possession of pot. They would rather catch thieves, murderers, drunk drivers, and wife beaters than deal with what they perceive as stupid drug laws that get in the way of them doing what they feel is their real their job... To "serve and protect" the public.
That my friends, is the biggest reason I'm in favor of legalization.
Sodomy is illegal in many states. Should we lock up everyone who commits sodomy in the privacy of their own home?
yes! what we need are government cameras in every bedroom! then the republicans can monitor people having sex, and arrest those who violate THE LAW. after all, it's THE LAW. and before you commit sodomy you should consider that. we should also have routine drug tests of all citizens, and jail those who test positive for marijuana. this way, we can get all the criminals off the streets BEFORE they graduate to more serious drugs and ultimately crimes, such as sodomy for one. this is the only way we can save society from certain doom due to that evil, evil weed!
we can rehab those who have smoked marijauna to drink alcohol, since it's legal. i dispute that alcohol has ever truly caused a fatality, because those people who were drinking were really THINKING about marijuana, so that's where the blame should go.
I addressed the question asked about drugs earlier, because it pertained to the subject matter of this thread. Quite honestly, whether i think sodomy should be legal or illegal is really none of your business.
i for one promise that i'd never even discuss that topic in your presence... not even for money!!!!
and i quite agree that it's none of my business what your opinions on sodomy are. ignorance is bliss :)

Ironically, the GA Attorney General, M.Bowers that got the anti-sodomy law (Bowers vs Hardwick) upheld by the Supreme Court was found to have had an extramarital affair during the time that he was prosecuted the anti-sodomy case. And there were laws against adultery in that state. He also withdrew a job offer to a lesbian attorney Robin Shahar in his administration after she had a commitment ceremony.
For some reason, they never charged him. But he did lose his bid to become governor. He has slipped from political power. However, Robin Shahar is quite successful. And Hardwick passed away from AIDs.
But on the topic of pot, I prefer it be illegal. Because pot makes people act stupid. And we have enough stupidity in this world.
Legalizing a dangerous drug/herb is as wrong as professionals (such as nurses) endorsing it. JMHO of course. :)Those professionals here 'for' legalization of pot are likely too personally prejudiced already to 'hear' opposing argument so I won't waste my time.
that argument can certainly be made in the other direction, with people for criminalization. advocating that cigarettes and alcohol should be legal while people are criminalized for smoking marijuana is pure right wing hypocrisy. i don't mean this as a personal attack, you may be a wonderful nurse, and that's fine. but for every study you show that demonstrates the harm of marijauna (many of these questionable and politically motivated) i can show you ten studies documenting the affects of alcohol and cigarettes.
yet magically, marijuana is scapegoated as "the gateway drug". i wonder how many people graduated to heroin without drinking alcohol? why isn't that the gateway drug?
have you seen the commercial which shows a guy in a car acting goofy at a drive thru... then he speeds off and runs over a child on a bicycle? then a voice comes on and says "marijauna, and you thought is was harmless"? what is the message there? that i'll go crazy and hit little kids on bikes if i use marijuana? how credible is that? how many drunks have caused car wrecks by comparison? shouldn't they show the same commercial and use alcohol?
criminalizing marijuana has an effect of making other illegal drugs seem less harmful. if i'm being lied to about marijuana, why shouldn't i be lied to about truly dangerous drugs ecstasy or ghb? that's the great harm in criminalizing this herb.

No i did not miss your point, so don't assume.

:rotfl: Exactly. :)
And yes, a person impaired by smoking pot could do something as stupid and senseless as hit a child while driving out of a fast food place.
Since we already have legal alcohol stupidity, why add legal pot stupidity.
Some of those "thieves, wife beaters, and murderers" use pot too.
steph
It's legal here for medicinal purposes AND we can grow our own for medicinal purposes.(only 5 plants or so at a time) PLUS...the cops need not be bothered wasting tax payers money arresting people who have marijuana for personal use on them. They go on a list of "those to watch out for" and that's it. It is after all only an herb. :)
so do canadian nurses get drug tested?
