Say, you get to a certain age, and then a mandatory retirement from being a bedside nurse to other aspects of nursing.
Your opinions please:)
How about a mandatory minimum age requirement to start with than?I've worked with many *competent* nurses well past the age to collect SS. I've also worked with many *young* nurses with little common sense or life experience in general.
I can see where you're coming from and makes sense too.

How about a minumum competency requirement to graduate from nursing school no matter what their age? That would increase the quality of floor nurses no matter what their age.
One would think that the ability to pass the rigors of nursing school and pass te NCLEX would show some level of competency..
Sounds good on paper, doesn't it? I also would have thought that new grads, with their MSN no less, would at least be competent in drawing up and administering an IM injection...sadly that hasn't always been the case.
I don't think it's an assignment. I think I have read posts along a similar line by this particular person in the past.
indeed.
i'm not sure about a minimum age requirement (as previously suggested), but i am all for an in-depth character assessment before being accepted into nsg school.
this would eliminate some of the arrogance and short-sightedness, often observed/experienced in the nsg environment...
no matter how and where that manifests itself.

unfortunately, not always. Some want to be 'rid' of these students so-off they go! Smart enough to pass the NCLEX with flying colors but on the floor..........
Doesn't impact their pass rates.

And not terribly subtle at that. Or, maybe she has a genuine concern for public safety. An ancient nurse might accidently lose control of her med cart and mow down a bunch of innocent people in the hallway the way old people think they're pressing the brake of a car and instead press the accelerator. ===shudder===:uhoh21:
