Mandated Flu vaccine?

Hi- Just received a blanket email yesterday that my hospital in VA is requiring ALL STAFF involved in patient care to get the flu vaccine this year. (incl nurses, physicians, clinical aides etc) I always get the vaccine voluntarily but feels wrong that this can be mandated. I still intend to get it. Is this legal? I remember something similar involving a group of NY Nurses some time back.:uhoh3:

I don't need to. Anyone who administers vaccines know that there are risks and complications with every single one that we give.

And the CDC website for "safety?"

Isn't this the same CDC that told us 25 years ago that blood was safe and AIDS wasn't a bloodborne disease?

You'll have to cite that CDC comment for me. I recall the CDC bellowing about this new blood-borne illness and potentially contaminated blood supplied from the rooftops to the Reagan-era deliberate deafness.

And as to reactions, we ask everyone about allergies and a hx of certain illnesses. Certainly any nurse who fits one of the criteria should be able to opt out. But otherwise, nah.

After watching these flu vaccination threads here for several years here, I am astounded at the number of nursing professionals that have had a "reaction" or "side effect" to the vaccination or have "gotten the flu from it".

If flu vaccinations of health care workers caused such a significant number of reactions, I would think vaccine researchers would be all over the data.

I am an LPN at a clinic in NH. If I do not receive the flu vaccine without an exemption for religious or medical reasons, by December 15th I will be suspendend until I comply. There are currently 20 states that will except a philosophical reason for not accepting the flu vaccine, however NH - "Live free or die" state is not one of them...

I was unemployed for 9 months when my employer closed the doors without notice. I decided to go back to school to become an LPN with an advanced course, taking me 10 month to complete. I am now in debt for school, and soon will have no job, where I have been working since I got my license in 2009. Back to unemployment???

Yes ... if that is what you choose. Personally, in your situation, I would choose to get immunized and stay employed. But you are free to choose which route you take.

So why should I get a vaccine if it isn't a sure thing against the flu :confused:?

Same reason you should still use a condom even though it is not 100% effective against HIV.

Wearing a mask at all times? Ridiculous - what type of mask? Regular surgical masks are not effective, so unless everyone has to wear the fitted masks, there is no protection for the patient. Ask your facility to show the documentation that the masks provided prevent transmission.

Also, isn't it like making you wear a scarlet letter - a breach of YOUR confidentiality because everyone knows WHY you are wearing a mask? Could this be a HIPPA violation?

I'm so glad my hospital hasn't started mandating flu vaccines. I've seen several patients get GB after a vaccine and don't want to take it myself. However Aurora has started mandating flu vaccines and they are a big player here. I hope this doesn't spread to the other hospitals. I hate how they take away rights and can force things on us that can be dangerous. We currently have to fill out a form if we got a vaccine and if not why not. I'm ready to get an egg allergy listed on my medical to protect myself from being mandated. That's how strongly I feel about the issue!

If you ever researched the history of vaccinations you will find out some unsettling things. Back in the day 1950's some vaccines had monkey kidney cancer cells, also in the third world countries like Mexico, South America, some poor women were given vaccines that were made to make them sterile, unable to bear a child. If they got pregnant a miscarriage would occur. Big pharma and the UN population control movement feels its ok to play God with people's lives, especially if they are poor!

I don't trust the vaccines we are given. With the last H1N1 vaccine the govt gave the vaccine makers total freedom from any liability with problems resulting from the vaccine. Yet we should be forced to take the vaccines, I don't think so. This is America and we should have the right to make an informed decision!

Your personal observations about GBS and vaccinations are an outstanding coincidence. According to an MMWR report in 2010 for H1N1 vaccinations

If this preliminary rate ratio is confirmed in end-of-surveillance analyses, the attributable rate of GBS would be 0.71 per 100,000 person-years, corresponding to an attributable risk of 0.8 excess cases of GBS per 1 million vaccinations.
(Preliminary Results: Surveillance for Guillain-Barré Syndrome After Receipt of Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 Monovalent Vaccine-United States, 2009-2010)

This means that less than one person in a million is likely to get GBS from the H1N1 vaccination. GBS is relatively rare only infecting 1 or 2 people per 100,000 people per year. So if you yourself have witness several patients getting GBS from an H1N1 vaccination it should be reported to your local public health authorities immediately.

I could not agree with you more. I am always willing to learn more. Perhaps you could provide for me, and maybe others who are interested, reputable links (including peer reviewed papers) for your claims that vaccinations are conducted in third world country to promote female sterility or that polio vaccinations cause cancer.
