Nurses General Nursing

Being a male, and entering into a field that is typically considered as, and is predominantly a female field, how are we accepted by other nurses? Do they feel threatened by the male presence, or is the idea embraced by our female counterparts?

as a male nurse I've experienced favorable treatment (IMO) and very unfavorable treatment, specifically, blatant sexual harassment

Welcome to allnurses! :balloons:

I've been a female RN for a loooooonngg time. I can only speak for myself, of course, but I don't care what color, gender, orientation, or anything else :) my colleagues are -- I only care whether or not they're competent, and reasonably pleasant (or, at least, civil!) to work with.

I've known some great male nurses and some lousy ones, same as the female nurses I've known. Some of my very favorite colleagues over the years have been men!

Best wishes --

The floor on which I now work, I am one of 2 males and the only one on the day shift. I, personally, was recruited onto the floor and welcomed by the female staff. I do know there are some areas, in some hospitals with sexism but it seems to be retreating more often than spreading.

Male nurses don't bother me, but I do know some ones who have chips on their shoulders. One male nurse (new grad) i know of is a total idiot, and thinks because he's a male, and there's so few males in the business that he should get top priority in nursing jobs on offer. He then wonders why he doesn't get the job.

Point being, there are just as many idiot male nurses as there are female nurses.

With that said, some of the best nurses I've had tutor me and my studentness have been male - esp. in psych, those big manly nurses come in handy when you dealing with a meth addict on a high who weighs 140kg and is over 6 foot! :yeah:

AMEN! We only have one male RN on our floor and I love working with him. He's wonderful, kind, very good with the patients, and is always willing to teach me things.

I just wish I had a half dozen more like him.

LOL was going to say something similar! The world is balanced; I'd hate to be an Amazonian like Wonder Woman :lol2: . I have worked on all female wards, and I hate em.

You are a nurse; we need ya!

I am still in nursing school but, the females are very respectful of me and the othe guys. They don't treat me any different thanthe females. I am sure there are few and far between that do see male nursing different, but for the most part it doesn't seem to bother them.

I am currently in nusing school and have been doing CNA on weekends. I work at three different local hospitals. In all three facilities, the male RN's I have worked with are all so helpful in times of need with a total assist or a difficult patient. Not one has ever rolled his eyes or thought he was above giving a few minutes of his time to reassure a noncooperative patient. I have high regards and I know I can count on them.

it's interesting that you write this.

i have read on this bb, complaints from male nurses who feel 'used' by their female colleagues:

that they are often solicited for the heavy, physical tasks or assisting w/combative pts.

and most of these complaints, also stated the female nurse would just watch, rather than help.

i'd be curious to see if any of the male nurses will speak up in this thread.
