male versus female nursing wages?

Hi,

I have to do a paper in my statistics class in which we must find something that we are interested in, take numbers from it, and relate it to statistics. Since I am going into nursing, and I am male, I've often heard criticism that male nurses make more than female nurses despite the fact that it is a female dominated profession. I figured I would use that subject for my paper. I work at the hospital, but I'm only a unit clerk (not a nurse yet), and I didn't want to go around asking all of the nurses at work what their wages were because they're pretty much my friends and I didn't want to seem rude. So I figured the web is the best place to ask people embarrasing questions.

In other words:

1) what is your gender? (male/female)

2) what is your hourly rate?

over here there is no hourly difference in pay. a nurse is a nurse regardless of sex and we get paid the same...........rubbish pay!

does that mean in the states men get paid more then women! for doing the same job??:eek:

You might ask someone in HR how many males are employed as RNs and how many of them are in charge nurse positions or administrative positions. Same for females. According to ANA there are about 10% male nurses in the USA. If that is true at your workplace, are there only 10% in charge or administrative positions or do males have a greater representation in management (where the bigger money is)? You might check out the ANA site (sorry, do not have it on hand). They do salary comparisons every year. So does Nurse Week magazine.

I saw this posted in another post where someone was doing a paper on GI nurses. NE way salaries in OK are the same male female only thing that matters is experience.

On another note It is an interesting thing to know that females will not as readily ask for a raise as males will. I speak from experience in my home my wife and I ar both RNs and she has been at her current job for 4 years and never asked for a raise over her annual evaluation I however as an agency nurse have had three raises in the last year because I go to my boss and tell her that I want what is right I am doing the work getting the shifts and they request me repeatedly so I got what I asked for.

Although I have recently beagn a full time job at the hospital I was working at as an agency nurse and took a serious pay cut, I did it mainly for the benefits I am suddenly 40 and find myself beginning to age hmmmmmmmmmmmm whats ups with that?

Female/ $18.68 per hr+2.85 diff for evenings. I work in a Pedi Triage Call center. Hope that helps. :) :chuckle

well "hot dude" (nice nic), we are unionized and wages posted by STEP so it's not hard to see who is making what and no, they don't differentiate by gender in that scale any place I have seen ....or in the handbooks we all have.

female works agency/registry ICU $40.00/hr. I think that male RN's move away from the bedside quickly. to advanced practice roles and or management.

yes this can be true some places. fortunately NOT where I work.

I've never heard males make more. But then again in this area it's pretty cut and dry. It's based mainly on the years of experience you have what you are hired into. Then of course you get raises, and it's pretty standard here that we all get 3%.

I think asking information here on this bb isn't going to give you much statistical info because we all live in different parts of the country. It took me 11 years at this hospital to make $25.00 plus $3.00 differential and I'm a Clin Nurse III. We have per diem nurses making $30.00. We have Clin Nurse II's making 18.00/hr.

There are too many variables. You need to narrow it down to get good and useful information. Just a suggestion.

Anyway. Male - 25.00/hr

I am a female and work for the state in Pa. There is no difference in male and female wages. We have a union. I currently make:

$25.42/hr.
