I have aplied to an OB position on the OB department. The manager hinted that they would not hire a male. I think is discrimination. I have great disire to work in the department. What do you think? would you hire a male nurse for your ob unit?

It is definitively discrimination if they don't hire you because your a male.

What exactly was the hint? I you really want this, you should fight for it. If you aren't hired, ask for a meeting with the manager and HR to discuss it. Make sure you have all the certs or academics you can get to make yourself the ideal candidate. Keep applying, good luck.

it is discrimination. during my ob rotation in clinicals, both of the l&d nurses i worked with were males, and they were amazing. i was surprised to see them in the unit because it's usually women. they were both outstanding nurses and the patients showed no signs of minding whatsoever.

good luck.

Well alot of women may have issue with a male nurse so although it may be discrimination, i dont see anything wrong with them not wanting to hire a male.

I understand where you're coming from. Discrimination is wrong no matter how you spin it. With men in OB, figure there are high emotions in there already, flighty female episodes are likely frequent, and a misfire from you as opposed to a woman could be seen as: sexist, harassment, etc-even if you meant nothing. You could easily be seen as a liability.

If you had a formal interview and they suggested they had you there for decoration (looking non-discriminatory) but that you would not be hired based on your sex, that's absurd and needs to be discussed with HR, etc.

I see something wrong with this. What if the VA decided that since most of the population is male they won't hire females? That would be wrong, and it is 100% wrong that a person cannot be hired for a job based on gender. If you think you are not getting the job because of your gender I would ask for a meeting with someone at the hospital (head of HR, nursing manager), I wouldn't threaten them with any type of lawsuit but I would ask leading questions so they get the hint you are aware of their bias.

Do they also not employ male OB-GYNs?

This statement is completely ridiculous and it's this type of notion that perpetuates this absurd stereotype. I don't mean to attack you buddy, but your perception of a male nurse in obstetrics is doing nothing to help our gender not only in this specialty, but in our chosen profession as a whole.

I agree it's discrimination to not hire you BECAUSE you are male. I find myself quite suprised that this thread made me realize.....I don't care about what gender a nurse is.......except for then, and my OBGYN was male. It doesn't make sense. I know that. But I think I just wanted another female in the room with me..... I'm actually suprised at my reaction to a male OB nurse. It shouldn't make a difference but it does.:o.......no matter, I'm done with babies....:clown:.

I think they should hire you, but if a woman requests another nurse you shouldn't be offended. Good luck:heartbeat

Exactly!

I think this is discrimination, a nurse is a nurse. We all look at the same body parts when we assess a person, don't we? What if the woman applying for the position were gay? They would probably treat her the same way. My point is we have male ob/gyn doctors all the time. I bet that manager won't hint that same thing to any ob/gyn docs. I have worked with patients who's family sometimes would request that they not have a male nurse. For what? I would appreciate any help from any nurse what so ever if they are nice and know what they are doing. Sometimes its better for a male because they are able to lift that extra weight from that patient. I would say talk to human resources and good luck.
