The Guys Club: Guy Students Come on In!

Nursing Students Male Students

Published

Hi All!

I'm a crazy father of 2 ex-premed who just recently turned down Northwestern to go into a RN program.

I already have an Associate in Science, but I'll be getting another ADN and then go to a 4 yr school.

When I went to an info session about the RN program ill be trying to get into, out of like 70 ppl only 5 were guys.

So I want to know are there any men out there?

Haven't been in this site for awhile now and glad to see this tread. It's good to see more guys are becoming RN in the US.I live in NewZealand where it is the same situation,we need more males in this field.I done my Diploma 7 years ago and I was 1 of 8 in a 98 class.I work in a REHAB Nursing and I enjoy this field....Keep it up you all.

how did you guys choose your field? i am going on my 2nd year of nursing program this fall which is a three year program, and i still havent found a field i would like to go into.

i probably want to go into a field where the work is routine, basically you do the same thing everyday, the same steps, and with little surprises that may happen. (i dont want to work in a nursing home or med-surg type field because the work doesnt seem routine and there is a lot of patients who may or may not cooperate, and i have awful therapeutic communication skills). As of right now dialysis is on my mind as a field i want to go into, but i have yet to have a clinical day there.

Hang in there man! You will find that it is definately worth the wait. Good luck!

Another stereotypical gay male nurse on television!

Thanks Big Brother 5 :stone

Hey, nice to have found this place where I'm not the minority anymore (at least not in here) as I represent 1 out of only about 12 guys in my 125 student ADN class here in Las Vegas. Now, being single, I can't say I have much of a problem with that ratio, it's just that at times it had left me wondering if this new career path was the most appropriate one. And, I think an argument can be made, that when it comes to some aspects of nursing--such as those tasks requiring a high degree of nurturing and therapeutic communication--that it can be a struggle for a guy, as we ain't born with that gene. I swear, it's got to be developed. :chuckle

Well, with one semester in and three to go, I've definitely come to realize this was the correct choice for me as the opportunities and paths this can lead to are endless. And, it seems only fair to say, that although this may not be the least stressful job around, it's one of the few where you can go home each night and know that in some small way, you were able to make a difference.

So, just wanted to send my salutations and wish of good luck to all of you!

Hey Fellas!

New to the boards here at allnurses.com. I'm another Dad who is answering the call to nursing. Starting this fall->Associates ->BSN -> MSN(Nurse Anesthesia). Good luck to all and looking forward to talking to you guys.

Good luck to you too! That looks like a heck of a degree path. That has to be the first nurse assoc-> bsn -> anethesia path that I've heard of.

Actually, he's not alone. I have a BA already, but am going the ADN --> MSN --> PA/Nurse Practitioner route myself. A long road, but the easiest path given my current situation.

I am doing the same thing, only not anethesia. I hope to get into the NICU and be a neonatal NP. Another year and a half and I will be done with my ADN. Then I am looking at a couple of associates to masters degree programs. That way I can skip the BSN altogether.

I understand where you might be confused. UNCC here in Charlotte, NC factors in the GPA of every class you have ever taken in your entire life in order to judge eligibility into the Upper Division Nursing Program. I have a lackluster GPA from 12 years ago at a community college in my hometown that burns me big time.

But,...

If I earn an Assoc. degree from a community college and become licensed as an RN, then I can come into the "RN-to-BSN" program, which only looks at your GPA from the ASN program and is only one more year. And of course I can move on up the ladder from there. Keep in mind that I'm aware that this is indeed a lofty goal, but it's my goal just the same.
