The Guys Club: Guy Students Come on In!

Hi All!

I'm a crazy father of 2 ex-premed who just recently turned down Northwestern to go into a RN program.

I already have an Associate in Science, but I'll be getting another ADN and then go to a 4 yr school.

When I went to an info session about the RN program ill be trying to get into, out of like 70 ppl only 5 were guys.

So I want to know are there any men out there?

I understand where you might be confused. UNCC here in Charlotte, NC factors in the GPA of every class you have ever taken in your entire life in order to judge eligibility into the Upper Division Nursing Program. I have a lackluster GPA from 12 years ago at a community college in my hometown that burns me big time.

But,...

If I earn an Assoc. degree from a community college and become licensed as an RN, then I can come into the "RN-to-BSN" program, which only looks at your GPA from the ASN program and is only one more year. And of course I can move on up the ladder from there. Keep in mind that I'm aware that this is indeed a lofty goal, but it's my goal just the same.

Another year and a half and I will be done with my ADN. Then I am looking at a couple of associates to masters degree programs. That way I can skip the BSN altogether.

I'm curious, what specific ADN --> MSN programs have you found, and do you know of a Website that lists national programs of this type?

Mtnair, MUSC in Charleston has an ADN to MSN with nine separate career paths to chose from. All that's required is to be an RN with 60 pre-req hours. Most of them are already completed during your ADN. Then 24 months of full time study and you have your MSN. CRNA school is different, you need your BSN and two years critical care experience. From what I've read most schools only require one. I don't know why MUSC would be any different.

I just watched an episode of Big Brother 5, What a bunch of yahoos. There's only a couple people on there who's IQ is higher than the number of fingers and toes they have. Which in their case may only be 8 or 9.

The only CRNA option in AZ that I'm aware of is Midwestern University. Really just a graduate school. You need to have a BSN with 1 or 2 years (critical) experience and then fork out $20k a year.

Thanks for the info guys. Having done some searching around via the Net, it's interesting to note the variety of programs out there and the differences in entrance reqs...there seems to be shortcuts if you're willing to get creative enough.

I have been told that the University of Wisconsin offers this option and Marquette University may offer it as well. I am still researching this while I work through the ADN. I will keep you all posted as I find anything further.

Hello, I am another new guy here. I notice a few people are from the computer field also like me. Have any of you who are from the computer field look into Nursing Informatics?

Medicine takes too long for me. Also in medicine you are really a specialist at the biological level (exception probably will be psychiatry). Nursing involve learning the biological, psychological, social, and spiritual level of a person which attracts me as I feel at home dealing with the whole person. Also it is a matter of different focus, medicine focuses on curing and nursing focuses on caring and a good health system needs both. I am more interesting in the caring aspect, guess because I cared for my aged mother for many years before she died.
