Male nurses

Yesterday, I was standing in the hall talking with a coworker. It was 7 a.m. shift change. There was six students on the unit. Five of the six were Filipino males. I said to my coworker, ""Look down the hall, you'll see the future of nursing.""

As the only Male RN in my workplace, it can be quite an adventure at times. 42 Nurses total in my work area, and I survive by playing big brother, and son to my peers. I found out by going the extra mile, and showing respect for the ladies by addressing them with Miss ____, I appear to gain their respect in return. The Key I found is to listen, and try not to give advice that you might not have on hand. I use the internet to gain answers for some of the harder questions, and act as a venting board for other occassions. So far I appear to have gain their respect, and I found out that I enjoy at times playing the rooster in the hen house, even if I can't help with the eggs.

I always enjoyed working with male nurses, and I prefer having a male nurse manager over a female any day. (Oops! Here come the stones being thrown at me from all the females! Ouch!)

Be careful what you say... there is someone out there who will throw the "H" word.. In the new and unfortunate politically correct world, we skate on thin ice with many. Very sad. As a male and a supervisor, I wish there were more males in charge nurse and supervisory roles. I never know what mood some of the female staff will be in. Not all are bad and it's usually a handful that give the rest a bad rep. But there are some males that just plain stink too.

I don't remember a course in nursing school that taught how to deal with jealousy and not to gossip... two big problems in hospitals and humans.

Remember there is always someone here you will upset by what you say..

Ooh I welcome male nurses. I see it as refreshing and new. I love working with my fellow nurses but I know how women can be at times with all that player hating and gossip starting. I don't see men doing that as much and it will add some spice to our profession. I am not saying all of us are like that but you know you know someone or a "click" that makes your work a living hell at times. :-) I welcome you to the profession I wish you well Bradely ahahahahaha

I've been in nursing for 25 years and have never really had any problems other than being one of the "girls" my wife puts up with most of friends being female but professionally I've found it doesn't matter what sex I am as long as youre willing to do the work involved

Welcome Bradley!!Both to the BB and to an exciting career. My husband and I are both Nurses.I am his boss..TeeHee!! He has said the main problem he has with being male in this predominately female world is similar to what women have put up with for years in a male dominated workplace. Maybe it's just human nature?!

welcome Bradley, dont let people discourage you if being a nurse is what you really want to be than go for it. In general male nurses are treated well other nurses work well with me and patients love me. As you can tell by my nick I am a male L&D nurse, getting my foot in the door in this area was hard but worth it. My coworkers have really come to like me, patients have treated me great. Thus far I have found the few male RN's I have worked with to be pleasant, capable, and conscientious workers, and good at teamwork. Good luck to you, Bradley.
