Male nurses

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I was just wondering, since male nurses are becoming more visible in the work force, how do they seem to working out as far as being co workers. Also what do see for the future men in nursing? What improvements can we as nurses make to help our fellow nurses? I really want to be a good nurse, but lately some fellow male rns are trying to discourge me telling me being an older male rn w kids can really test you. I really dont understand some of the reasons why (seem sort of petty to me). Any input would be appreciated. thanks-

I absolutely love working with male nurses. They're just fun to be around. They really surprise me. I mean we have to do some pretty nasty things and they do them without any problem. And they come in really handy when helping to turn a heavy patient.

Mario, I like the old picture better. Should we have a vote?

No, please do not vote about my picture.

Have no qualms at all with working with male nurses.

I vote for the old picture Mario!!!!!!!

My only experience working with a male nurse, was several years ago on an inpatient psych unit. In that regard, I will say it was great. He had worked on the unit as a psych tech, while attending nursing school, and upon graduation, continued on that same unit for a while until he left to work at a state psych hospital. The thing I remember is that, on that kind of unit - having a male around in any professional capacity, always made it feel a little safer. Not that I consider myself a 'scaredy cat' mind you - their presence just seemed to add an extra safety factor.

Besides that, he was a real sweetie and got along great with everyone.

i like working with the male nurses. your numbers are increasing by the day. im thinking it must be hard on them working with all women.

mario...i like this picture much better

I like working with both female and male nurses, as long as they work good and have a good sense of humour.

PS: Mario this picture is much better!

Take care, Renee

Well, I'm second fiddle now, because there is a woman with a GIF animation avatar, that is pretty cool looking, blowing a kiss and all. A GIF is like a brief movie with 4-5 changing pictures. In the GIF, this person, although not dressed like a nurse, is blowing a kiss. I WANT A GIF. I couldn't copy her .gif, so i would do a somersault, and then extend my arms. Now I know what I gotta try to do at the campus on Tuesday. :-)

I like ALL nurses female, male, straight, gay, Catholic, Jewish, Hindu, Black, White, Asian, Midlle-eastern...doesn't matter as long as they are team workers and COMPASSINATE, COMPETENT, RESPECTFUL human beings (and if they bring me chocolate I show them favortism, ha ha)

Mario, this current picture is very cute, really.

Specializes in CV-ICU.

We have something like 18-20 males on our 75 RN staff in a 22 bed CV-ICU. I enjoy working with the guys; but occasionally give them grief about "too much testosterone" on a shift when the guys outnumber the gals.

Many guys seem to gravitate to critical care and E.D.

I've said this on a previous post, but I believe that male nurses tend to be very committed to nursing, as they have had to contend with other people's attitudes throughout training and/or Uni, and have confirmed their decision by the time they come out as RNs. This usually makes them great nurses, IMHO. Female nurses may or may not be committed, and are frequently great nurses, but often haven't had to think about the decision to become a nurse quite the same degree.

Certainly all the male nurses I know or work with are excellent nurses.

Love to work with male nurses, they add "flava" to the routine workday. The ones I've worked with have a great personality and enjoy working with mostly women.

Also I think having males in this profession is a great thing ('cause unfortunately it is still mostly a man's world) and they are able to get people to listen. Hopefully this will bring about better working conditions and more respect for the profession. So any males who are interested in nursing should be encouraged to pursue it.

Any time I hear someone making fun of male nurses, I immediately put them in their place!

My husband and I are both RN's. He has since gone on and finished a degree in Nurse Anesthesia and works as a CRNA. However he spent years in the CICU at a 400 bed hospital. He worked well with everyone and was treated very well. The only thing he mentioned is that sometimes the "girls" would expect him to help them with moving patients and lifting more than they would ask anyone else. I just found that to be normal. If there's someone there who looks able, that's who you pick. Nursing is a great field. There are so many choices and areas to specialize in. If it sounds good to you, that's what matters. Work should be a place you enjoy being. I have always loved my work, and I know my husband feels the same about his. Good luck to you.
