2010 Macomb Community College Applicants.

U.S.A. Michigan

Published

I just finished taking the HESI at Macomb Community College today and got a 91.02. (Not very happy about it) My GPA for all the required prerequisites is a 3.58. With all of the admission changes for 2010, I'm not sure where I stand. I'm assuming the accepted GPA's and HESI scores will be lower than years past. What does everybody think? Do I stand a chance? Please share your GPA on the required courses and your HESI score. Thanks.....

Hey, I plan on taking the HESI Exam this winter. I was wondering, how was the test overall? Also, how was the math portion of the test? Did it consist of word problems, or just plain Ole math problems?

I took it before they added the A&P section so I am not sure if it is different now, but I remember the math being really similar to the questions in the HESI guide. Just know simple conversions and the math thats in the guide and you'll do fine.

The suspense is killing me! Has anyone heard of an anticipated mail date for the letters? I'm hearing mid-end of April or even May. I wish other applicants would post their scores so that we'd have a feel of what the average is for both GPA and Hesi. Does anyone know how many people applied this year?

Question for current students already in the MCC nursing program...Is it harder/easier than what you expected? Are you able to work full time with a flexible schedule while in the program? Any insight that you could provide would help. Thanks!

I am in the program now...finishing up the first year. I would say it is a lot more work than I expected, but it IS doable. I had a bachelors degree already and getting that degree didn't require as much effort as nursing.I was able to keep my GPA high and not feel too overwhelmed, but I also am not working. I haven't had a huge problem on the exams, but I do stay in most weekends and study. As for working in the program...I worked full time for the first 8 weeks and it was difficult but manageable. Once we started clinicals though it would have been very hard for me to work 40 hours a week. I don't know anyone in our group that works full time but I think about half the class works part time. I guess it just depends on your job...can you change your schedule every 8 weeks? We don't get to pick our class times at all and they can change and add extra labs whenever they want. So flexibility is REALLY important. The theory classes don't generally have a ton of homework but you really do have to study a lot. I guess I wouldn't reccommend trying to work full time, but I was in the same boat and I had to work full time (until I got laid off).

Good luck! Waiting for the letters is horrible, I remember it very clearly!

For me it's pretty easy but I seem to be the odd one out. People in the program are nuts...they think everything is hard and overwheleming. Like inthe first 8 weeks you have class ONE day a week and lab ONE day a week and people were going nuts about getting assignments done! And these people didn't have jobs! Come on people!

Anyway, I am in peds, so just about done and several of us work full time or close to it (32, 36, 40 hrs/week). Sure I don't get all A+s but we do just fine. It's not a problem for a motivated person.

Thank you A4L4S and CorazonDeOro for your replies! My boss is amazing and my work schedule is very flexible, so I'm pretty confident that I'd be able to work at least 35 hours per week if I get accepted into the MCC Nursing program....now where are those letters??? Lol. When you received your acceptance letters, did they tell you what your start date was or were you able to choose? If I get accepted, I'd really like to start ASAP, but I know there are four different start dates.

You don't find out your start date until June or July if I remember correctly. At orientation they let you tell them your preference, but they also let you know that it is based on ranking and if all your prereqs are done. Then they mail you a letter telling you your start date.

I was just wondering, is there a wait list for the Macomb program? I know that almost every school in Michigan now has a waitlist and it is very competitive so I am trying my hardest to keep my gpa up. Jamie, you said there are 4 different start dates for the program, what are they? And do they accept applications on a rolling admission? I know I could probably search through the website and find all this out but sometimes I think its better to ask here. Hope I'm not bogging you all down with questions!

Corazon I see that you said it is based on if all your pre req's are done, do you mean the co req's? Because I know that they require you to have A and P, Micro and English done before you can even apply. Was this different in the past?

If I'm not mistaken, I believe the four different start dates are August, October, January, and March. Based on other comments, I believe the higher your ranking, the sooner you can start. The top applicants receive first choice. I think that is how it works, but not for certain. I'm hoping we receive our letters within the next three weeks or so.

I hope that you all don't have to wait too much longer and get the acceptance letters you all are anticipating!

MsAshley, the three courses you mentioned are for GPA purposes for admission to the program, however there are other pre-reqs required before you can take certain nursing courses, i.e. PSY, PHI, Nutrition. Maybe that's what Corazon is talking about?
