This is for those of us that will be applying to LA county college of nursing and allied health's fall 2014 semester. I will be submitting my application for the basic RN program tomorrow... Yayyy!!! I am beyond excited, I can't believe this time has finally come!
What did you think of the school? :)
I really liked it unfortunately I thought that taking the train was going to be easier than driving and it was crazy that like a month ago I had a dream that I was going to be late cuz I couldn't find the place and it literally happened lol I was 10 mins late and was pouring sweat so bad people were looking at me funny but it was great!
I was surprised at how many older people were there
Questions to you all:-What happens if you don't get the second vaccine of the Hepatitis B series done by the time we start school? I am currently working on getting it done but my doctor has been booked and was only able to make an appointment until late this week. I recall that ------------- said that we will not be able to participate in the program for this semester if we don't get the second Hep. B vaccine by the time school starts, correct?
- In case all else fails at my doctor's office and am unable to get my titers results quick enough, how do we go about getting all our titers/vaccines through health services?
- I remember ---------------------- said that she suggests we don't get a fancy stethoscope so what kind did you all get?
You should try wellnessmart md.... I've heard good reviews but am unsure of their prices. I remember getting a flyer from school and I think they were fairly reasonable.
As for stethoscopes I know the littman classics and the lights work really good. I got the cardio III when I took a cna class just bc that's the one I wanted and if I was going to get one it was going to be the one I wanted. I got it engraved though because all stethoscopes tend to "walk" that's prob why she said not to get an expensive one
Hey smylee!I already got my livescan done and am working on getting my titers/vaccines done (hopefully by this week). As far as books, shoes, and stethoscope go, I have held off on purchasing anything until I finish getting the health clearance form. Have you purchased your malpractice insurance?
Yes, I ordered my malpractice insurance already

Honestly, I thought that we were supposed to have the first hep b done by the start of the program, so I'm really unsure.
As far as getting our vaccines through health services, I thought that she said that we do that when we go for our health clearance after we get cleared from our live scan. It was so much info, I can't remember, I should have recorded the preRegistration.
I got a Littmann lightweight II. It was $44 and it came with free engraving

Which train did you catch? I haven't found a train station close by; the nearest is Union station. Is that where you arrived? I took the train last week for my livescan and arrived at Union Station and took the bus that let me off across the street from the school, not realizing that HR was about a mile down...smh. Thank God a maintenance worker saw me and asked if I needed a ride and gave me a ride on the little carts they drive around.
I'm pretty good at taking public transportation, I just totally thought that HR was close to the nursing campus.
I will be taking the bus to school everyday, I hate commuting, so driving is out of the question :)
Are you a traditional or non-traditional student? I noticed that you said you were surprised at how many older people where there, not sure if that was a good thing or a bad thing :) I am a non-traditional (older) student, so it's definitely a good thing for me to see older students. That way I don't feel alone :) Also, I am always asking myself, "am I too old to do this"

I took the red line and was going t take the silver line which drops me off infront of the hospital and walk but I didn't have a dollar because I borrowed a bus pass but it didn't work for the silver line so I wound up taking some bus that dropped me off infront of white memorial and then I ran over there but got stuck because of the freeway and had to backtrack again! I will be driving from now on.
I am kinda a non traditional student. I'm 27 and have a daughter lol I didn't start college until 24

LOL! That's horrible but I'm glad you made it!
Did you learn any new information aside from what you read here? :)
Funny that you bring wellnesssmartmd up... I was just looking into it two nights ago... If I can't figure this Hep B mess anytime soon, I'm definitely going with them.
What do you think of the cardio III? Is it too advanced? haha

I thought we were supposed to have the second one done... Ugh, I am definitely feeling stressed out now! I called ------------ to ask during my break but was told that she stepped out of the office. By the time I got out, the office was closed. I'm going to call first thing in the morning tomorrow.
I've been under the impression that it was the second vaccine... Anyone else out there know?
I'm going to look into the website! Thanks for letting me know :)
Like you, I will also be taking public transportation. I'm only one or two buses away depending on which route I take. I wouldn't mind driving but it's too many streets that I have to take! How long would it take for you to get there on the bus/train?

I'm actually a little crazy.. I've read the syllabi and the study handbook already. Lol I did not get any new info but I did ask about my high school transcripts because I'm not 100% sure if I graduate or not.
Honestly I didn't get to use my stethoscope as much as I was led to believe but it picks up really good sounds when taking a bp I didn't get to listen to anyone's heart with it
