This is for those of us that will be applying to LA county college of nursing and allied health's fall 2014 semester. I will be submitting my application for the basic RN program tomorrow... Yayyy!!! I am beyond excited, I can't believe this time has finally come!
From my personal perspective, I would never risk my spot in the nursing program. It is extremely competitive to get into one these programs, and once one gets to be accepted, one should not forfeit their seat. That is just my opinion. And also, this year they seem to have lower cutoff points so you don't really know what next year is going to bring. Maybe, next year there will be a lot more applicants, maybe more applicants with much higher pts so the cutoff might go up. Why risk it?! By just applying to the program means you were at least somewhat ready to start the program, otherwise you would not have even applied. And even if you do keep your job for a few more months until the next application period, I don't think that the financial situation can get that much better in only few months. But, like Dragonfly said, we do not know your situation, so maybe we are all wrong, and you truly know the best. I am just talking from my perspective an how I see things. I hope you make the right decision and good luck to you either way :-)
I just have some credit cards that have balances, cell phone bill, cable, etc. my boyfriend said he'd pick up most of them and support me financially as much as he can while I am in school. I think I'm just worried about my credit and being broke for 2 years!! lol
I have beem working full time all of my life. I plab to get as much as possible from student loans and make the rest up by working while in the program. Even if it means eating macaroni and cheese and ramen noodles for 2 years, i dont care. I will do it! Lol. Im in the same boat but i have worked so hard to get here. Im not going to turn it down because i have bills. I will find a way to cover costs! People do it all the time. It will be hard to work and go to school, but its only two years! Call in sick for the preregistration and give your notice two weeks before class starts and start looking for a job that fits your schedule when you know what your schedule is.
That's actually what I plan to do, I'm a LVN now, so It looks like I'll be picking up patients on the weekends!
I think County's schedule is perfect for people who plan to work part time. Friday, Saturday and Sunday are days to work and also people can study after work.
Agreed! :)
Unfortunately, I think I'll be working throughout the week but at least I'm hoping that Fri, Sat, and Sun are my days off so it can be pure studying! SOOOOO much fun haha

I saw County's schedule of classes in my acceptance envelope. Their schedule seems pretty light compared to LACC's schedule. We do our clinicals from 7-5pm, and lecture days are almost until 4:30pm, plus a friend told me that also some weekends will be used for clinicals. When I saw County's schedule, it seemed very light. You guys could definitely work as you would have time to study after classes and have weekends off for sure

Yeah, I was pretty surprised when I saw that classes/clinicals were only from Monday through Thursday.
It was nice that the school included it in the envelope, as it gives many of us a heads up to plan ahead. What I meant in my previous post was that hopefully I have Friday, Saturday, and Sunday off from work, not school. I work full-time right now and it's going to be quiet difficult to go to part-time status... Crossing my fingers that I'm able to.
I'm just so relieved to have gotten accepted! :)
I think its definitely hard to switch from full time comfortable job into part time job and stress out because of bills. BUT next semester, or even next year I pretty sure that situation won't change ( for me ). In my opinion, even if I have to use credit cards to survive - I will definitely do it! Nursing is my dream. Nursing is profession that will provide for my future and my family. I think that some students will have huge student loans after school ( like doctors, lawyers, or RNs after West Coast University). I will treat my credit cards as student loans. I am not taking credit cards for clothes or traveling. I will take it for MY education, for my future. I don't think I need to live of credit cards but if I have to - I will.
