Looking for help finding PHN Job any suggestions?

Hi Everyone,

I love nursing. What I like most about it, is the ability to be an advocate for those who don't have anyone, or few people who care. I also enjoy patient eduation. Currently, I'm working as a Correctional Nurse which offers a load of challenges. Wanted to expand my horizons and try my hand at Public Nursing, but don't know where to start. Can anyone give me some suggestions. I live in south jersey. All the good I've heard about public/community nursing sounds great! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Take care.

Have you checked the job board of your county's health department? The public health association of your state? I know that my county often advertises for public health nurses, and you don't always have to have experience in the field. They do require a BSN, though - not sure of your degree.

Good luck!

Hello, my name is ashley. I am a rn from BC. I am dying to be a public health nurse, but unfortunately there are no spot for me as a new grad. I would love to hear about the opportunities in your country, if you don't mind me asking, where would that be, how can I get more info around, thanks!!

OP, check out your state's employment website. That's how I landed mine. No experience in PHN required, but it did require a BSN.

That's really lucky for you. British Columbia doesn't have that, especially with Fraser health or Vancouver costal. It always needs at least of 6 months recent experience, sigh.... So is OP ? Stands for Ontario province?

Thanks a lot for your reply btw, :)

Hi Chesscrp & Degalrn,

Thanks for your suggestions! Btw, I have a BSN. I will look into your suggestions and keep you posted.

Hey Gang. Just want to give a quick thanks for all your prayers, kind thoughts, and support. I had an interview today at a Neighborhood Health Center. It looks very good. Wish me luck!:)

Awesome! Keep us updated!

Update: I got the job! However, I'm not going to be able to accept it. The compensation package is so low I would have to move to a rooming house to do it! :eek:The annual salary offered was $55,800 that would be HUGE paycut! No can do. :nono:Oh well, I'll keep looking!

Unfortunately public health nursing tends to pay much less than hospital nursing. I work in public health and nurses who work in public health love the job -it's definitely not for the high wages.
