Lonestar Fall 2013 hopefuls

U.S.A. Texas

Hi everyone!

I just submitted my application for the Fall 2013 Lonestar College basic track ADN program. LSC-Montgomery is my first choice, followed by LSC-North Harris, and LSC-Tomball.

I applied with an 11.81. Has anyone else out there applied, or are you preparing to apply?

Looking forward to starting a supportive and informative Lonestar thread, as applicants have the past few years

I am on the same boat with the whole having to work through nursing school thing. I am currently a bartender at a restaurant and my hours are so late, I'm not sure if i am going to make it through working there if i never have time to study!! Can anyone suggest a job that might be in a hospital setting that doesn't require a degree or experience with very few hours and still flexible enough to handle school!?

The program is quite challenging. You must dedicate at least 30 hours to studying. Just when you think you've gotten it, read it again! I studied so much during the semester that now since summer is here, I feel as if something is missing. However, it won't be long before I start reading again.'

Thanks! I am interviewing for a Surgical Tech position. It's a pay cut from my current salary, but I'll take it if offered to just have some type of employment. I don't know the starting PCT rate but if I get any insight I will keep you posted. Feel free to ask my anything if I can help I'm glad to.

WOW! a pay cut? Where are you moving from? Which St. Luke's are you interviewing with? Will you be attending NH?

I would advice you to get your CNA certificate. The course does not take long. You may not be able to find employment in a hospital being a new CNA, but I think if you're wanting to study while at work, a nursing home would probably be the best place for you. You may have 30 mins or even more between rounds to read a couple of pages. That is if you work the night shift. Another option would be to wait until after your first semester and apply for a Nurse Tech or PCT position. I think there are hospitals that hire NS as PCT if they have completed at least a semester.

Working as a PCA/PCT is a good job for a student. Once you get a semester or so of hospital experience (through clinicals) you'll be a good candidate. You'll also be qualified to sit for your CNA. Being a sitter or monitor tech are good options, too, especially if you work at night. Studying!

Just be aware that you may have to put it hundreds of applications before you even get a call. Some hospitals have outright told students they don't like to hire us because they put so much into training us and they know we're leaving soon. Hospitals who do hire students are flooded with applicants because we ALL need a job in a hospital or we're pretty much screwed getting a new grad job in one.

"Very few hours" is relative, but your best bet is to find a PRN job. Most hospitals only require you to work two or three days a month. Be wary of part-time jobs because the weekend commitment is high and tests are on Mondays at Montgomery - that's kicked a few people's behinds.

Still no email regarding Fall classes and clinicals for NH, am I right? I just want to be sure I am not the only one? Anyone?

Same here. I hope this is not indicative of how the program is going to be. :-(

The 2nd orientation date was yesterday i believe and now they should have everyones first, second, and third choice for the summer class. It should take a few days to get that situated and maybe we will hear something by Monday..fingers crossed!

We had our orientation today and they said it will be a couple weeks until we get our summer schedule and be able to register for anything. They will be emailing us with information, but it won't be for a couple weeks!
