are you also applying at workplaces outside the hospital? nursing homes, home health, hospices, clinics, doctors offices, urgent care centers, freestanding dialysis centers, psychiatric facilities, group homes for the mentally retarded, assisted living facilities, and adult day care centers are all frequently open to hiring new grads. in the area where i live, hospital employment is very hard to find, but many of the nursing homes will hire a new rn on the spot and train them.i graduated from rn school in may and have applied at many hospitals.
I agree with the commuter. Also networking is huge. What's the saying? It's not what you know it's who you know. Even if your best friend or mom can't help you, you never know when a friend might have a friend that works at a place that needs people. Don't give up. There's many of us out there with ya. We thought hospitals would be lining up and giving us bonuses. Hope something comes to you soon.
I have to second (third?) the networking. I landed an interview from begging a nurse I knew at a hospital 800 miles away to ask every person she came across if they had a contact in a hospital near me. It worked. She worked with someone that worked for 10 years in a unit by me. The person called, spoke some good word for me, a few days later I got an interview. You'd be shocked were you can find people to help you.
Hey, hang in there. I'm living in total poverty as well, I just applied for food stamps (seriously). Networking can only take you so far...I knew the Director of Nursing personally at a local hospital and even after a successful interview I still did not get the job (I was competing against 2,000 people). I've looked at adult daycares, home health, called every single person I know - it is useless. California stinks for jobs right now. I've applied as a medical assistant, an LVN, a receptionist. Once they find out your're an RN, they hang up on you because they know you'll leave the first chance you get. I've had my resume professionally done, have a bachelor's degree and excellent gpa and references - I've even taken public speaking courses to excel at my interviews. I'm thinking about joining the Navy Nurse Corps...I can't go on living like this. Totally wish I hadn't wasted my time on this career. Hooray for the nursing shortage!
Jorhyne,
I agree that finding a job is difficult, it took me almost 7 months. A hospital job is probably not going to happen anytime soon because there's just too much competition. The minute I stopped applying for those and applied to long term care facilities, I immediately started getting calls. I had 3 offers in 1 week! My suggestion is to call the nursing homes where you live, ask to speak to the DON or HR, find out if anything is open? If so, drive to the facility and fill out an application (they still make you fill one out even if you email your resume) and alot of times you will get an interview on the spot.
Good luck!
A recent study indicated that there are more RNs being produced than there are jobs in 48 states. The only two states with more jobs than new grads are Nevada and Alaska.

I desperately need an RN position somewhere, anywhere. I am thousands of dollars in debt, I have two kids to support, a lousy 20 year old car, and live in complete poverty. I graduated from RN school in May and have applied at many hospitals. I haven't got the first response back much less an interview. I am willing to move to BFE at this point.
Are there any places I can go and get a job now? I am prepared to go anywhere!
