My friend is an RN who works in the oncology floor of her hospital. Very dedicated, organized and thorough nurse. She called me last night very disgusted. She lives in an apartment building and on her way into the complex, she runs into a woman who flags her down saying "Oh, just the person I was waiting for" and proceeds to tell her that she no longer has medical benefits and handed her a list of medications she needed for her child...Advair, Albuterol canister as well as some for the nebulizer and prednisone. No dosages, really expected for my friend to just go shopping at her place of work for Rx for this woman who barely says 'hello' to her under normal circumstances.
I mean, where do people get off with this?? It seems that people have no issues asking you to jepoardize your license, your integrity or your job to help them. I would have told this fool to kiss where the sun can't shine and they would have needed a biohazard truck to clean up after all of the language I would have used had she continued to be persistant.
Any wild stories of how people expected you to risk your position as a nurse?

There are people of limited brain power and people lacking in the social graces in all segments of society. Reacting to them with extreme anger is a waste of my vital energy, IMO.

This woman obviously is trying to see what she can get away with. And I guarantee you that if your friend did this for her it would be never ending requests and I would bet that it would go on to focus on narcotics. I would be up front with this woman and tell her to leave me alone, period. I am sure that she could find other ways to get what she needs.
I remember that during my peds rotation there was this one sitaution where MD told the mom of an asthmatic child that in order to prevent future hospitalizations for asthma excarbation the child must take Albuterol at home and the mother replied that the the Albutelor is to expensive and she will ask her family in central America to send her a a similar drug that cost less:)

Do you write your nursing notes like this?

I would have said "come catch me in the morning", taken her list to work, found a case manager with a number for medical assistance, and taken her list back to her with the phone number!
Not to excuse her at all, but sometimes people are scared and don't know how to ask for help.
The only person who bugs be routinely for "nursing" things, understands it is $25 a BP when I visit, and no he doesn't get a discount for being my father! :)

I would have told him that they don't make doses big enough for what would be required for him.
I would also remind this woman that giving her these meds would be prescribing without a license and tell her to talk to her physician about free samples or other options that might be available.

i like the idea of finding the number of a place that can assist, we have several low income clinics in the area that i keep the number of in my pda. ventolin inhaler is $9 at target, albuterol solution for the nebulizer is $4 as is the prednisone i just checked. for the advair the neighbor would need to go through a medication assistance program this is the number glaxo 1-866-gsk-for-u, or http://www.gskforyou.com/
I work for a city hospital that will treat all children for free until they are 18 years of age. I did give this information to my friend to give to her neighbor, along with the nearest facility to their residence. Hopefully, she'll pass this information on to this woman and maybe others.
I openly admit that what annoyed me the most (and I was not the one approached) was that the neighbor never took the time to speak to my friend at all, but came to her with a list that she seemed to believe should have been honored. I have encountered weirdness like this, but the list takes the cake. Yes, I would have taken the time to explain WHY it can't happen this way, provide a few resources, but, if the person were to insist, I can't deny that the resentment would have been blaring.
